I'm interested in what people think. I feel that if you are caught with a handgun, you are showing an intent to murder or seriously injure someone, and therefore should be punished severely.

Banning guns isn't the answer. The truth is that unless we are prepared to give the police enormous powers and we are prepared to sacrifice a fair amount of personal freedoms then their will always be crime. Its beyond the ability of the government or police to stop all crime and once in a while you will get spates of it. The problem are the people over-reacting and thats just what the story in T.O. is. Yes the violence is tragic but banning guns won't stop it. I bet even extremely harsh punishment will only diminish it somewhat. Its a price we pay for enjoying the amount of civil liberties we emjoy. All we can do is make sure the people involved in gun violence pay dearly for their actions.

Chirs Rock has a solution, make bullets cost 5,000.00 a piece. You're gonna think twice before spending 5,000 bucks to shoot somebody!

Gun crimes should be mandatory jail time... even if you use an unloaded one to threaten somebody.

Getting caught with a handgun and not having a permit for it should be very, very expensive.

Point 1, if bullets cost $5000 a piece then the criminal would just steal them.

Point 2, as a handgun owner, I agree!

Point 3, again, as a handgun owner, I have a permit to take my guns to the range when ever I want, but may only transport them, from my house to the range and back..... so again this law is already in place, but criminals don't follow the laws anyway, and if they got caught with their guns, most likely, they'd end up shooting the cop that caught them anyway!

I think what we need is to put more money in our police forces, so they can afford the resources they need to fight this problem. I think most people here realize that guns aren't the problem, it's crime!!!!

My real answer is not even included in the poll.

Let law-abiding citizens carry concealed weapons and crime will decrease. As it has in each and every state in the USA that has implemented right-to-carry laws.

Society is safer when criminals don't know who's armed.

Hey chopper, do most police officers-slash-Interpretive Dancer / Professional Re-De-Virginizers share that opinion or do you think a lot would actually support this Liberal plan??

Virgil @ Fri Dec 09, 2005 5:09 pm

I think they should be banned, and there should most certainly be heavy punishment for use.

And when a gun-toting, paranoid, law-abiding citizen walks down a shady back alley, hears a noise behind him, and unloads eight rounds into a stray cat? Having everyone armed most certainly levels the playing field between criminals and commoners, but then again, permitting everyone to have a concealed weapon implies that there is danger at every corner. How many of you have had a mugger point a gun in your face? Do you honestly think that an old granny can pull a gun out of her purse without getting shot? Having a gun in a tight spot will help you the most if you have the gun already out! This implies that to be a fully effective self-defence measure, people should walk around with guns in their hands! I would rather live in a place where Wild-West shootouts don't happen.
