Hi, I'm a bit of a sucker for quotes about firearms, so I wonder if you guys are interested in a thread about this? I'll get things started:

Both the oligarch and Tyrant mistrust the people, and therefore deprive them of arms. — Aristotle

Americans need not fear the federal government because they enjoy the advantage of being armed, which you possess over the people of almost every other nation. — James Madison.

"An unarmed man can only flee from evil, and evil is not overcome by fleeing from it." --Col. Jeff Cooper

No man's life, liberty, or property are safe while the legislature is in session. — Mark Twain

-James Brady

xerxes, the police are not mandated to save your life, just to apprehend the lawbreakers. If you're counting on just the police, they'll get their just in time to call the coroner so don't ever leave yourself defenceless.

A free people ought not only to be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government. — George Washington

When Pa was at home the gun always lay across those two wooden hooks above the door. ... The gun was always loaded, and always above the door so that Pa could get it quickly and easily, any time he needed a gun. — Laura Ingalls Wilder

The most foolish mistake we could possibly make would be to permit the conquered Eastern peoples to have arms. History teaches that all conquerors who have allowed their subject races to carry arms have prepared their own downfall by doing so. Indeed I would go so far as to say that the underdog is a sine qua non for the overthrow of any sovereignty. So let's not have any native militia or police. German troops alone will bear the sole responsibility for the maintenance of law and order. — Adolf Hitler, April 11, 1942. (Source: "Hitler's Table-Talk at the Fuehrer's Headquarters 1941-1942", Dr. Henry Picker, ed. (Athenaeum Verlag, Bonn, 1951).)

The people never give up their liberties but under some delusion. — Edmund Burke (1784)

Thanks to the government’s past record, it is unfortunately very predictable that, in spite of the severe penalties mandated, tens of thousands of people will not comply at all (with Bill C-68). A new class of criminal will be created among harmless citizens whose previous lawbreaking may have resulted in nothing more than parking tickets. — Lee Morrison, Canadian Mounted Police

"Let us not hear that the registration system will cost $100 per firearm. Let us not hear that it is a prelude to confiscation by the government of hunting rifles and shotguns. Let us not contend that it will cost $1.5 billion to put in place. That is the way to distort the discussion. That is the way to frighten people." - Former Liberal Justice Minister Alan Rock, Hansard, February 16, 1995.

"I came to Ottawa last year, with the firm belief that the only people in Canada who should have firearms are police officers and the military."- former Justice Minister Alan Rock (currently the Health Minister of Canada)

"A man with a gun is a citizen. A man without a gun is subject."

- Author Unknown

"A system of licensing and registration, is the perfect device to deny gun ownership to the bourgeoisie."

- Vladimir Lenin

"In Germany they came first for the communist, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I didn't speak up because I wasn't a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time nobody was left to speak up."

- Martin Niemoelle

"What this issue taps into are the ideas of self protection and private property - ideas from south of the border that are quite alien to Canadian values."

- Wendy Cukier, Anti-Firearms Lobbyist with the Coalition of Gun Control. Globe and Mail, February 19th, 2000

Wherever standing armies are kept up, and the right of the people to keep and bear arms is, under any colour or pretext whatsoever, prohibited, liberty, if not already annihilated, is on the brink of destruction. — St. George Tucker, in his edition of 'Blackstone's Commentaries,' 1:300 (1803).

Bottom line is:
better tried by 12 than carried by 6.

Col. Jeff Cooper. That name always envokes a chuckle from me. Considering the man just died, no disrespect, but he hasn't always been cycling properly. There was a time that his ".45 or just die in a noisy way" was pretty funny. just my observation..
Carry on.

Gun control? It's the best thing you can do for crooks and gangsters. I want you to have nothing. If I'm a bad guy, I'm always gonna have a gun. Safety locks? You will pull the trigger with a lock on, and I'll pull the trigger. We'll see who wins. — Sammy "The Bull" Gravano, whose testimony convicted John Gotti.

Courage is contagious. When a brave man takes a stand, the spines of others are often stiffened. — Billy Graham

You must understand, therefore, that there are two ways of fighting: by law or by force. The first way is natural to men, and the second to beasts. But as the first way often proves inadequate one must have recourse to the second. — Niccolo Machiavelli in "The Prince."

"If someone has a gun and is trying to kill you, it would be reasonable to shoot back with your own gun." — The Dalai Lama, (May 15, 2001, The Seattle Times) speaking at the "Educating Heart Summit" in Portland, Oregon, when asked by a girl how to react when a shooter takes aim at a classmate

Shame that he can't take his own advice.
