Saskatchewan Becomes a Have Province

It took a while, but the Saskatchewan finally repaired the economic damage done by the Progressive Conservative Devine government of the 1980's and the province is now a have province.

The status is dependent on oil prices at this time, but if wheat prices improve and the BSE crisis is solved, even a drop in oil prices will not end the province's status as a have province. Saskatchwan has been diversifying its economy for years and now has growing technology and manufacturing sectors, as well as traditional agriculture and resource-based sectors such as oil and potash.

The NDP government has been working toward this goal since Roy Romanow first came to power and has continued to carefully manage its fiscal situation under Lorne Calvert.

Good for Saskatchewan and good for the NDP. This proves that an NDP government can be in power and make money. All this without cutting taxes for the rich and breaking the backs of the poor. I think I may take my next vacation to Cypress Hills.

8O Hell froze over!
kinda skeptical about it...any source? If it's true then good show, hopefully the NDP can spruce up Manitoba as well.

Now if only we could boot Campbell out and follow that example of growth, 2005 can't come fast enough.

CBC Radio 1...a show called The House. CBC Newsworld did a spot on it too.

The NDP have been doing okay here. If the hydro deal with Ontario goes through and we keep banging away on things like that, we will be a have province in the future, but that's not going to happen right away.

$1:
I also have very little faith in the federal NDP in being fiscally responsible and if I thought they would ever form a government I would vote against them and yes I have in the past.

I think they'd do pretty well...it depends who is in charge of the money. For all the complaining about the BC NDP and Bob Rae's government (both of which can be debated) the NDP has a pretty good overall record of managing money.

$1:
Even though I was not a big fan of Bob Rae when he was Premiere of this province, looking back I see now they pumped a lot of money into the economy that was in recession and we were in recovery before the evil greedy empire was elected.

I was travelling to Ontario a lot during the Rae years and just after his government fell. His spending very much stimulated the economy and set the stage for the boom that followed.

$1:
As far as Manitoba is concerned I have no idea, haven't followed the politics in that province.

I have. I moved here close to the end of the Pawley NDP government. That fell over a rate-hike in auto insurance, which was stupid considering that was being caused by added expense of fixing newer cars. It was such a petty thing, really. I didn't vote for Pawley though. He wasn't doing anything positive and when he built that damned bridge to nowhere. Apparently he had been good at one time, but that was before I moved here. He needed to go.

That gave us eight years of Filmon's Conservatives though. Filmon didn't do anything positive either. He was pretty good at making excuses, but he sucked at running the government. In his first term he quietly sold off MTS's fibre-optics at a severely cut rate. In his second term he privatised MTS even though he had promised not to. The rumour, and I've heard it from men in suits who thought this was a good idea, is that he wanted to privatise Manitoba Hydro next. There were some election scandals, hospital bed closures, and a few other minor debacles under Filmon. He wasn't as crooked as Grant Devine, but pretty damned close.

Doer came next. The economy is good, unemployment is down, he brought in some electoral reforms...mostly having to do with donations to the parties. I don't know if I'm voting for him again or not...my MLA is an idiot and won't get my support again. I heard he might be gone soon though.

I live in Victoria as well and hope Campbell will be gone in the next election. Since I moved here I've heard nothing good about him. And from what I've seen, he needs to go now.

FluKe @ Sun Nov 28, 2004 9:19 pm

Didn't the Doer government privatise Manitoba Hyrdo?

Rev_Blair @ Mon Nov 29, 2004 6:42 am

No. The PC Filmon government before them privatised MTS and were likely going to to the same to Manitoba Hydro, so we voted them out. Manitoba Hydro is still a Crown Corporation.

mcpuck @ Wed Dec 08, 2004 10:32 pm

MTS is only partially traded .. The Manitoba Gov. still owns about 51%. That move helped save MTS.

All that AND the Riders are getting into the western division playoffs a lot lately!

SK has close to the same amount of oil as AB, it's just a lot deeper from what I've heard. (My brothers both work on the rigs).

Young people with ambition have generally moved out of SK, of course, a lot of folks from southwest SK also move to Medicine Hat to retire...

Hopefully some industry fires up there, they need people. Almost twice the size of Texas with the population of Edmonton... no wonder the roads suck!

Rev_Blair @ Thu Dec 09, 2004 11:19 pm

They had the best roads in the country before Grant Devine came to power though. Christ you could drive 80 miles an hour while rolling a joint and drinking a beer...and that was on the gravel. Come to think of it I did wreck a lot of cars. Maybe good roads are a bad thing?

Godz: To answer your question I would have to take you on a beer-fueled road trip to farms and towns and cities. We'd finish up in the Punnichy pub where the barmaid keeps a sawed off cue stick under the bar for when the conservatives get out of hand. It would be an education for you though, Godz...you'd learn a lot more than you ever did in college.

If you got the money, honey...I got the time.

Robair @ Fri Dec 10, 2004 7:37 am

A little SK history for you 46.

$1:
Devine led what was arguably one of the most corrupt governments in modern Canadian history. Although Devine himself was never accused of criminal wrongdoing, several members of his Cabinet were sent to prison as the result of a kickback scandal that operated during Devine's second term from 1986-1991. Due to these problems, the Saskatchewan Progressive Conservative Party disbanded after his administration. Many former members and supporters now support the Saskatchewan Party. Some PCs have carried on the party name, running enough candidates in each election to maintain the party's status as a registered political party.

That was taken from Wikedpedia
