My sister was at the U2 concert last night Bono told the crowd, 18000 not to vote liberal [BB]

When we get a winter in Canada where I don't have to buy a snow suit so a child I don't know can stay warm, or give food and money to feed the less fortunate, then by all means let BONER take credit for sending our money around the world, I would support that, I have been in several shitholes of the world and seen the sad situations first hand, however, most of the problems stem with the society that they live in. If these assholes want to keep going with tribal and religious wars, dictatorships then the weak (tjheir own countrymen) will always suffer. People who talk about helping out with "CDN UN TROOPS" (lol) then do something like going into a recruiting center and join up, we are recruiting and I for one am getting sick of always going over there because we are so shorthanded, if you want troops, then feel free to join up, foods great despite what you read!!!

I'd like to hear the names of these so-called 'responsible' governments.

To name a few there is Ghana, Malawi, Mali, and Senegal.

Hey I like U2, I am just saying BONER needs to get off his soapbox and remember people payed LARGE to see him prance around in his fag shades and sing, not talk politics.

And you're right abour Bono needing to step off the soapbox. He's a selfrighteous windbag.

Ghana:

$1:
illicit producer of cannabis for the international drug trade; major transit hub for Southwest and Southeast Asian heroin and, to a lesser extent, South American cocaine destined for Europe and the US; widespread crime and money laundering problem, but the lack of a well-developed financial infrastructure limits the country's utility as a money-laundering center

$1:
Well endowed with natural resources, Ghana has roughly twice the per capita output of the poorer countries in West Africa. Even so, Ghana remains heavily dependent on international financial and technical assistance.

Malawi:

Is facing increased corruption, so aid will be wasted or squandered.

Mali:

A good case for charity once canda gets its own house in order.

Senegal:

A potential problem due to internal political conflict. This should be monitored closely before any foreign aid is given and possibly abused. Once Canada has eliminated its child poverty, Senegal could be considered a recipient of foreign aid from canada

Touche. Some of the info I'm reciting is off the top of my head and a few years out of date.

That being said, they still aren't the worst countries in either Africa or SE Asia. Compared to places like Congo, Somalia, and again Zimbabwe, countries like the ones I mentioned are not beyond redemption.

But the presence of corruption shouldn't be the main reason for denying aid. Virtually every government in the world has corruption to one extent or the other. We know all about that sad fact here in Canada. Corruption can be controlled and subverted.

ShepherdsDog @ Sat Nov 26, 2005 9:42 pm

My grounds for denying aid to other nations is simple. There are people in Canada, who I have already pointed out, who are not receiving the aid that they need. Once they receive this aid, then I'm all for helping others. Charity starts at home.

But how far would you take that? Until no one goes hungry? Until there are no homeless? Laudable goals, most definitely, but to the neglect of what?

As lamentable as poverty is in a country as rich as Canada, it's nowhere near as bad as it is in other places on earth. In Africa, there are millions upon millions of people who live on less than $1 a day who die because they cannot afford to buy food or to buy medicine to prevent malaria.

This is my opinion, but I would rather help those who are in the most extreme conditions first as opposed to the ones "at home" who can still expect to afford food sometime.

kerfuffled @ Sat Nov 26, 2005 9:55 pm

I think Bono should match us $ for $ here in Canada, he can afford it. We have our own problems here in Canada. Just think of how well off our own poor and also our First Nations people would be if we spent the kind of cash that we throw at African debt relief and Tsunami Disaster and Pakistani Earthquake relief. So many millions of dollars its mind-boggling. Personally I think rock stars should just rock. Maybe on his next tour they should play for free, just ask for donations. I'm sure he would be "crushed".

WOOT
While i like the Liberals a whole lot less than U2's music Bono can bag-lick me. No rock singer from another country is going to tell me how to vote in my own country. Or tell me how to spend my foreign aid/tax dollars. Especially when that rockstar makes money with a shovel playing his whole activist schtick.Image
