Canadian doctors warn against 'freebirthing'

Updated Thu. Jun. 21 2007 2:27 PM ET
CTV.ca News Staff

Web The small but troubling faction of "do-it-yourself" childbirth advocates who encourage unassisted childbirth are courting danger, warns the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada.

I don't know what really to think if it should be legal or illegal.

CTV.ca is running a poll on this and its pretty dead down the middle.

Health Care is free in Canada, so its not a matter of cash. But I guess I don't really know..

I voted no. I dont see a problem with it if they can do it properly.

I am completely against it. Even though the mother may have a healthy pregnancy and show no immediate complications on an ultrasound. During the actual delivery the status of both mother and baby can deteriorate rapidly.

Not much can be more natural then birthing a baby.

novachick @ Thu Jun 21, 2007 8:47 pm

Of course grain. Things like previously undetected life threatening birth defects/abnormalities never occur in unattended births.

High child mortality was "natural" too. It's a very bad idea but I'm not sure making it illegal will make a difference.

True, but there are always risks, and you need someone there who knows what to watch out for, who knows what to do if something goes wrong, and who can do it.

A freebirthing mom won't have access to suction and oxygen if there's meconium in the fluid. A woman in labour and after labour is not in a sound state of mind due to being flooded with hormones, and will not be able to make accurate, rational decisions should something be amiss.

Bottom line, wheter you have your baby at home or in a hospital, you need someone there who is trained in childbirth.

The lady in the story seemed to be saying that she'd use a midwife but can't afford it. Two solutions: punish intentional freebirth with a fine of the going rate for a midwife, or:

FUND MIDWIFERY!!!

PS: My wife had a homebirth with a midwife, and we paid $2500 plus GST out of pocket.

So if the baby dies and you didn't mean it to then it should be illegal but if it dies and you meant to abort it then it should be OK and a basic right?

Grain I like and respect you. We will have to agree to disagree. I'm not a great debator..I prefer to express my views and then i'm done. If I keep debating I end up getting pissy and saying something I don't mean. [BB]

I voted no.

It is not something I find a smart thing to do, but to make it illegal is just one step too far.

I had both my kids at home, with the help of a midwife, and later the babynurse came to take care of me and my baby. It is paid for by health-insurance.
Here over 30% of the women deliver their babies at home. The Gyneacologist (sp) only sees the special cases (something wrong with the baby, or the mom) and does the c-sections.

You can choose to have your baby at the hospital, with a midwife. The care is exactly the same. When something goes wrong, the gyneacologist needs to be called, so that will take just as long as when you were at home, and you would have to come from there.

If I would have more babies (which I don't) I would do it at home again, with a midwife. No doubt in my mind.
