Sheesh. We've only been in Deficit for a few years, not decades. Just freeze New Spending, especially new Military Equipment, and we'd be Balanced in a few years without much angst.

You got the numbers to back that up? You want to freeze health care, for instance? Harper blew the surplus by cutting the GST, so you'd also have to raise taxes, even if you freeze spending.

And, that's just the deficit - we've been sitting on a mountain of debt since the 1970's.

Raising the GST wouldn't bother me, but we need to keep some perspective on the issue here. Revenues are down due to the recent shrinkage in the Economy, Spending is up due to Stimulus Programs and Harper's constant Military Upgrading(not saying there's no Need, but it has been too much too quickly). Stimulus Spending is ending, so that's one Cost out of the way. The Economy continues to recover, so Revenues will continue to improve. All we need is just some Fiscal Discipline for a few years and Balance should come. No need to begin slashing or gnashing, we are not the US or some EU backwater that's been perpetually in Deficit for decades with a false sense that Deficits don't matter.

The only way Martin was able to run surpluses was by slashing and gnashing and by raping the UIC fund. Harper would have to do the same, only he will even more slash low income people. Sure, some economic discipline would be nice, but nobody wants that anymore, just say they do. Who ever gets in rewards their voting base with tax dollars. Look what happened to Joe Clark when he wanted to raise gas taxes and was honest enough to say so. We need somebody like Tommy Douglas running the show. He cared about the average Joe, but turned over every penny three times before he spent it. Those kinds of guys can't get voted in these days.

I disagree. Martin had to do that because the problem was so deeply rooted. Our current Deficit is simply the result of this deep Recession, nothing more.

Stop government subsidies of universities, the arts, bilingualism, and welfare.

Raise GST and insitute a poll tax on all citizens of $1000.00.

Unnecessary and quite frankly, Ideologically motivated nonsense.

Then how am I to feed my family? I suppose I could do gay porn. 8O There is no subsidization of universities in Canada. Positive external benefits of an educated society BY FAR outweith the tax costs. Education is never the place to look for cuts.

Although the government does subsidize universities and the arts and it does sponsor bilingualism, it pays out welfare and EI benefits in an effort to keep social unrest at a minimum.
