Why were they disliked? They seemed to stand up for Canada in Quebec and they get bashed for it. Yet when a referendum was held, the majority of them stayed in Canada.

Can someone tell me what exactly is going on? Why are they so unpopular in Quebec?

why were they disliked in quebec ?

well they weren't origianlly , both ahd success at first and won many seats it wasn't until later that they suddenly were disliked .

the dislike for whatever reasons started after they were in power , so it likely has something to do with whatever they were up to in ottawa at time .

maybe sponsorship scandal could count as a reason ? for chretien

Uhh, no.

They were not liked because they stood up for the Country as a Nation.
They told the separatist ass holes where to go. and that is it in a nut shell. They were and are Federalists.. plain and simple... and that my friends took balls !

THAT'S why they were disliked.

I propose this is evidence that Quebecers are smarter than they look.

Seconded.

well maybe its more evidence thats just because someone is french doesn't mean they are liked and popular in quebec . dion might be an example of this as well .

The one thing that's wrong with arguing Trudeau and Chrétien were very disliked because they were extremely strongly anti-separatist is that a little over half of Quebecers are federalist... under normal circumstances one would have to conclude separatists got to hate federalist figures, yet federalists also should tend to rally behind them because the issue is so omnipresent in the province's politics. There definitely has to be some other reason. What it is is up for debate (I'd say it's mostly about their tendency to centralize), but there simply has to be another reason.

Some federalists are pretty nationalistic: Their heads may be federalist but their hearts are sympathetic to the separatists, thus on a subjective level they tend not to like Chretien or Trudeau even if they voted for them.

Add to that the fact that federalists tend to be very low-profile compared to the loudmouthed separatists.

Yup, exactly the kind of "other reason" that could explain this all.

Its common belief that the reason they we're both hated is because of their Centralist ideals. Québec, leaving aside Federalism and Seperatism, has always been against Centralism for Canada as a hole.

The only reason they got votes in Québec, in my opinion, is because of the Seperatist/Federalist split that we had (Still have perhaps?) for the last 4 decades. Seperatists went behind one party, and federalist went behind the other. No matter your opinion on other issues, the most important one was that.

But now that Seperatism is no longer an issue in Québec, you can see Centralisation and Decentralisation comming back as a major issue. The main reason for Harper's Current and Futur succes in this province, compared to Stephan Dion (Who still is hated by most Québecers).

Simple rule that has prevailed for a century since Maurice Duplessis, if you believe strongly in a powerful central governement for Canada, you won't be liked in Québec. Of course, as long as Seperatism isnt a major issue (Like now, and then).
