what debate? How about.... a comprehensive industrial strategy? Someone like Harper would say that we've got a "comparative advantage" in staple exporting, but until ~1900-1910 we had a comparative advantage in exporting finished manufactured products. When Britain was the only country having an industrial revolution, Canada produced cast-iron stoves that could compete with British ones in quality & price. The engines used in the first steamship to cross the Atlantic were 100% Canadian made, out of Canadian steel, assembled in Canada with Canadian parts. We were also the 8th-largest manufacturing economy in the world until Laurier's reign of terror (he was the Harper-on-crack of his day). We should take a page from Sweden's book; at around 1870 all their land & ironworks, etc were owned by British & German industrialists, much as all of Canada is owned by Americans today. Coincidentally, their landscape has an uncanny similarity to the Canadian Shield. Anyway, all of a sudden in ~1870 all the politicians looked at each other & said "what the f$&^ have we been doing?!?!" & they (most of them) committed to lowering foreign ownership & encouraging Swedish industry. (I think Harper thinks we should help out Canadian industry, whatever there is, but with more "free trade" & wiping out subsidies, etc, which is the opposite of what pretty much every other country did)

Excellent points N Say. I believe we should take a page out of the history books of Sweden and start lowering foreign ownership and encourage more Canadian industry. This will strengthen our sovereignty and boost our economy. If Canadian politicians listen to non-profit organizations like Vive and to the ideas that countries like Sweden and Cuba have, but not to the full extent of what Cuba has done, we can turn this country around and have a Canadian revolution. Interesting about Sweden, they have the Nobel Peace Prize Awards, one won by a Canadian PM Lester B Pearson, great healthcare system, and great minds like Ingvar Kamprad (creator of IKEA) and Lukas Moodysson (made a few films the world is familiar of)

We live in a global community now any top dog can go out and buy wahetevr it is. You have to stop thinking on the National scale and think internationally.

Regarding the global economy. A global economy is just that - a mechanism that operates under market conditions.

To suggest that the nation has less of a role to play now is to suggest that any given economy can meet all demand.

I will freely admit that people and nations can make mistakes. However, it is foolish to assume that the economic interpretation of a supply/demand graph is going to help rural employment or provide non-specialized opportunities in a given market.

Mr.Can-Euro @ Wed Sep 22, 2004 8:50 pm

I do not mind criticism. I believe criticism is a helpful way to learn from our mistakes and learn how to see both sides of a situation. As long, however, the criticism is positive and some of your criticism Stymiest is and some is not. A bit off topic but is anyone aware of the anti-Canadian and anti-Mexican site "United North America" where members gather and talk on how Canada and Mexico are going to end up as part of the United States one day. I'm thankful that Vive is around along with other Canadian nationalism sites so I can see and discuss with people who believe in Canada and how to fix its problems .

z_whalen @ Wed Sep 22, 2004 9:27 pm

That's funny, I'm sure I heard some less then "positive" criticism when discussing certain Canadian and American politicians on this site. Let's face it, not all criticism is candy-coated for your pleasure. People in this forum have been kissing each others rears for so long without any real debate that now when someone comes along with something different to say, everyone thinks they're under attack. Two words of advice: Toughen up.

But so far most of what I've seen from you is parroted right wing talking points peppered with mean spirited attacks. Grow up or find a forum more suited to your style of 'heated debate'.

French representation was horrid in both wars.

The fact is you'd probably asll love too believe that their is some secret American Organization bent on global domination but lets get out of your little soap opera lives for a moment and get back to reality here.
