I don't know, AoE is a great history genre but it's a bit past it's prime. I favour the Total War style of combat, it's more realistic and has more to do with tactics than simple numbers. I do like AoE's historical backround, it's more historically accurate, but I like Rome: Total War more because it sets it in the time when Rome was just starting, gives you a brief starting point, that sends you on your way to make your own history.

I don't have the time to make a long post.

Has anyone seen AoE3??? The graphics are awesome. It's more recent in time. I will always like AoE1 and 2 because of the civilizations.

Yes, AoE3 looks great. I just hope it has the same ease of playability as AoE:TC.

I must have played THOUSANDS of hours of II and III.
Have to go out; I'll check this thread again.

Interview with the lead programmer

$1:
....
GS: What kind of system requirements are you aiming at, both in terms of minimum requirements and optimum requirements? Will you need any specific kind of hardware, such as a hardware transform-and-lighting-capable video card? How will the game scale down for older machines? Any plans to build special support for current and/or next-generation hardware features?

DP: Our games have always sold a bazillion copies, so we definitely focus on hitting a wide hardware market. Our games sell for years, so we have to be smart about what we support, both in terms of what we ship on day one to what's going to be coming out in the future.

Age 3 will support fixed-function cards, all the way up to the newer shader model 3.0 cards. Obviously, the better your machine, the nicer your game will look. I would easily expect that the game has enough high-end graphical features that most folks won't be able to crank it all the way up right away. The hardware still has a bit of catching up to do.

LOL....My brother and I always played this online......he would always come at me with as many horsemen as possible. Used to whoop my ass til I figured out pikemen knocked down those horsies real quick! Then my Longbowmen would goto work!

AGES is cool.....how easily you can cheat sucks.

Excellent looking game. But I will never see it like that on my computer lol. Loved original AoE. In fact it was one of the games we encouraged our boy to play. Multitasking and a balance of strength and resources was needed to win and it gave us the opportunity to explain historical references etc. I had Age 2 but it never would run for me. No idea why . Went to Age of Myth with Titans add on and that runs fine. Go figure. Lately I have been playing Warcraft 3:Frozen Throne online. Its like Aoe stripped to its essentials. Game play is a lot faster, especially online. I wonder whether this AoE will make for a faster build (thus combat comes sooner), or a slower more tech/resources intensive build. I always liked making sustainable societies on the way to winning over the AI but in online play that is a recipe for losing. You always had to gut your society and throw everything at the other guy as fast as possible to win. Personally I always thought your army should start dropping like flies if the home economy fell apart because of mismanagement. That would've kep the chariot archer rushes to a minimum!
Any idea what the gameplay is like? Any early adopters out there with a copy they've played?

I APOLOGIZE! I'm an old bugger, Nixon was Prez when I graduated from High School!

When folks were talking about "II and III", I thought they meant "Kings/Conquerors" and "Myth/Titans", which I have played and played and played. (and NO "cheat-codes")

There is a new one? YAHOO!!! Being retired and arthritic in the legs, I have something to look forward to as the winter months approach!
Like the motto of the Comedy Channel: "TIME WELL WASTED."

AOE3 looks awesome. I played 1 and 2 a lot, includling many sleepless nights on the net while in university. I never got into Age of Myths because I don't care for orcs and wizards and such, but I'm looking forward to this one. The historical aspect of the game is what always appealed to me most, well that and the great graphics.

I'm also hoping they come out with a 4th one that takes a more modern approach. It would be awesome to use AOE to fight WW1, WW2 or a hypothetical WW3 against the Russkis.

The Hoser @ Thu Jun 23, 2005 9:30 pm

Ya, but modern history isn't really "Empires" it would be like... Age of Lies or Age of Imformation or somthing like that.
