Mixed.

WHile I think it's great they're trying to do something about "pornography"... this is nothing more than a fishing expedition. If they're tatgetting someone specific and have reasonable grounds, fine. But to demand ALL records in a random week?

Uh uh.

Agree, it's a nonspecific request.

What, do you have something to hide?

Anybody who's involved in child pornography deserves to get put away for a long time. I don't care how it happens. If they can save ONE child from abuse this is worth it 100x over IMO.

And if google has a problem with this (which they undoubtedly wouldn't if it was a Democrat making the request), maybe they need to rethink their decision to store everybody's search queries in perpetuity.

bootlegga @ Fri Jan 20, 2006 3:14 pm

I'm glad Google is standing up to them.

I could see if they wanted to know who searched for 'pipe bomb' or 'child sex' or something, but to say we want records of everything everyone searched for is far too Big Brother like...

It wouldn't work in getting a wiretap, so why shoud it work on the Internet?

gideon @ Fri Jan 20, 2006 3:20 pm

I have nothing to hide, but that's not the point. I'm sure you've heard the old poem about not speaking up when they came to take away the gypsies etc... so when they finally came for you there was no-one left to speak up?

So you're speaking up for the scum that sexually assaults children?

How noble of you.

$1:
If you really want to save one child... take care of your own and don't search out child porn... because it's wrong, not because Homeland Security might come and get you.

Great idea, maybe you could tell that to Jessica Lunsford's parents since clearly you think it's their fault that she was brutally raped and murdered by some dreg of society that you feel compelled to protect.

I clearly understood what Lily is saying, why are you having such a hard time?

Same principle applies here.

Kiddy porn has to be the most despicable crime ever, if you use the internet to further those aims then you lose all rights to privacy

I'm currently volunteering my time in fighting child porn.
Some of the stuff I've seen would knock anyone sick.

No way I could do what you do. :(

Sure. But everyone else shouldn't have to suffer alongside.

Bootlegga had it right - target specific words and/or phrases.

Thats how it's done. And no I do not advocate a general spying operation, just for some stuff.

Ripcat @ Fri Jan 20, 2006 3:42 pm

I once searched 'vulva' in google images....it wasn't pleasant, alot of the images were of the medical kind showing what different diseases can do to a woman's beautiful pink parts. Quite the learning experience! I recommend all women, the young and the more mature, view these images before having unprotected sex with a stranger... If they have a lick of sense they won't be having sex at all till they have developed a relationship.

canucker @ Fri Jan 20, 2006 3:46 pm

All you need to do is enter a number and you'll get porn pics. They are so sneaky in the way they present them.

Gideon, I think you're just looking for a fight in the wrong place...

How is anybody "suffering"?

If you didn't search for anything involving kiddie porn, they won't bother you. Hence no "suffering."

It's that simple. Really.

hamiltonguyo @ Fri Jan 20, 2006 9:29 pm

actually it is too easy too abuse WAY to easy... I can see if they set of fake child porn sites as a sting but not doing something like this....its like they're attempting to wiretap everyone except with the internet...

No, they're merely asking for a set of records from google. Not the whole internet. And they are targeting a specific set of offenders, who engage in activities that are universally despised.

I fail to see the problem here.

hamiltonguyo @ Fri Jan 20, 2006 9:42 pm

because thats like saying were going to tap all the phones and then we can arrest them when we hear child porn. I see no problem If a judge issues a court order for the records for evidence but it is scary when the government thinks that everything your doing can be scrutinzed. Next it will be preotestors, next left wingers, next University profs...see where i'm going it can all happen in little steps once the precedent is set. Also this gives the americans authority over world wide cases...what makes america the world's policeman?

No, it's strictly about child porn.

Take your pick: the world's largest economy, the world's most powerful military, or something else?

Like it or not we really DO control most of what happens on this planet.
