So... as a follow-up...
I did get the laptop to refresh a couple of weeks ago and it all seemed to come back to life but I had issues with a couple of drivers not working (audio, video, a USB port. They were showing as corrupted).
Took it in to a computer place I've used before and he reamed it out. Hard drive is fine, which is good. Windows installed and now I'm chipping away at getting everything set up again. Starting fresh! I still have a few things to re-download and other programs to re-install but I'll get to it gradually.
Thanks for all the feedback though.
My old PC is next up. The graphics card is failing (intermittent horizontal flashing) but I have a great monitor and no reason to just get rid of it as I'm barely using 10% of the hard drive. It's still on Windows 7 so I might just up it to Windows 10 or consider an alternative.
Now update that desktop, Windows 7 is shit. And make sure to remove any anti-virus program once you do.
It's also end of life in January 2020. Gonna have fun telling countless companies they need to upgrade
Companies are the slowest, and accountants are absolutely glacial. I have no doubt half of them are still running AccPac on 386s because they're so fucking cheap.
I upgrade an average of five computers a month to the new Windows, they ALL heard "Windows 10 was no good".... like 5 1/2 years ago.
Lady just brought me a desktop to fix. She "just" bought it from me, don't I remember? (Closed the shop & retired April 2014)
Saw her carrying it by the moulded in top handle, the see-thru side from when light rope mods were "in", 40 GB Wd drive was built in 2004.... just bought it from me fifteen years ago...
