I would appreciate any advice on this issue I'm having with my Asus Laptop, running on Windows 8.1

On Friday I turned my laptop on, as usual, after a normal shut-down on Thursday and as usual the Asus logo appears but rather than go to my login screen I got the following:

"Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart" - (also displays error Oxc00007b)

Then it displays the Asus logo again and
"Preparing Automatic Repair"
Then
"Diagnosing your PC"

Then it goes to Auto Repair with message "Your PC did not start correctly" (Duh!)

When I go to Advanced Options - Troubleshoot - Advanced
I do get the option to restore to a point before whatever the fuck caused my issue and it is an auto restore point dated Aug 23rd. When I select it and let it run it comes up with this:
"System restore failed to extract the file C:\Program Data\Norton\ followed by a lengthly file name"

I have consulted many a website on how to fix my issue but am unsure as I haven't found anything definitive but I'm wondering if it is possible or even an option to try going to the command prompt (which I can access from the Adanced Options-Troubleshoot menu) and delete that particular file? I guess what I wonder is if the Norton program created that file due to something I inadvertanly encountered and it is corrupt. I know what I keep finding in sites I've consulted is to disable anti-virus when attempting to restore to a restore point but if windows won't even start up then how the hell can I do that?

The error I get in the original "Your PC ran into a problem" screen of Oxc00007b is another issue all together. I have never had this happen before. I have also not let windows updates run for a couple weeks so I'm wondering if there was an update that might have auto-fixed this. Regardless it seems to correct this issue I need to be able to get windows to start up first.

Also note I have not installed or downloaded anything for ages now so it's not something new that has caused this problem.

I'm also wondering if this is more of a Windows Issue, a Norton issue, or a general Asus issue?

The CKA tech geeks might vehemently disagree but this approach always works for me with recalcitrant computer equipment:

Norton or Windows 8.1 to blame? That kind of minute difference as to what piece of crap program is responsible can really only be solved with a coin toss. Best to just blame them both equally. Computers? Gah! Image

The option to drop it off my balcony (4 floors) did occur to me on Friday.

I opted to turn it off, unplug it then completely ignore it for the last 3 days.

Perhaps I should contect Norton and give them the file name and find out if it is a necessary program file or one created (because of corruption) that can be safely deleted like I mentioned via the command prompt screen?

Sounds like a corrupt windows or a failing hard drive. Or corrupt windows caused by failing hard drive.

Concur. I'm thinking her 64 bit 8.1 installed a Windows 64 bit 10 driver update and now the machine can't boot.

Thus I'd recommend starting in safe mode and removing the most recent updates.

I have windows updates set to not automatically install but to allow me to select and go throught the process.

It appears that would reset everything to original.

I went to Norton's forums and posted the issue and it seems by the reply I have already received is that Norton can prevent the restore to a previous date process. I'm thinking now that I may have to try booting in safe mode, disable Norton then retry going back to the date of system restore. Waiting on more info before I start trying that.

This is what should be done the instant you see Norton on any computer.
Or Windows 8.1.

My advice is do startup thing again, click additional restore points. They dont fucking belong in a Norton folder but SystemVolumeInformation. Try. a different one.
Then as soon as you can update the damn thing to Windows 10

**If its one of the Asus tablet/laptop combos that came with 8.1 just forget it. Buy a new laptop, they're way to finicky and flakey

It's a windows issue and it's caused by the updates they've been putting out lately. I'm running windows 7 on my desktop and everytime I try and update it the thing freezes. So I restart it and then go through the whole "your computer didn't start properly" scene. Unfortunately you can't pick a restore point until you get it running again but for a laugh read the entire page after you restore it because it'll tell you what caused the issue and mine keeps saying "a windows module has prevented this computer from starting properly" .

So just let it do it's thing and restore itself, Then turn off the windows updates because that's what's likely the fekin issue.
