housewife housewife:
Mowich how goes th battle? Any rain? Are the stress levels going down?

Our alert was lifted yesterday, housewife though nothing has really changed. No rain. Hot, dry conditions. Gusty winds and now an evac and alert order just to the south of us for the Green Lake, Watch Lake, Dekka Lake area. The smoke is almost ever-present and only varies in it's density. None of us are unpacking our bags yet.

herbie herbie:
This will be the trophy shot of the summer. "Which way do we evacuate, officer?"

Isn't this a great photo, Herbie. One could almost believe that the officer and the pig were having a discussion.

Just heard that Green Lake is under evac now, Herbie as the Ashcroft reserve fire again jumped containment. Wondering how your sister is and if you've been in touch.

No it doesn't sound like you will be unpacking anything for the season. Hopefully you will get some rain soon.

Sister went back to Green Lake and had to evacuate. Some fires north of Quesnel burning and I just got a call from someone up north about their resort's accounting computer. She's sending it with a helicopter returning from a small fire up there, gotta meet it at the airport this afternoon, send it back on their grocery order truck in a couple days...

Hopefully your cabin will be ok herbie.

Here too. This morning I could at least see the outline of Grouse and Seymour Mountains and now they are completely obscured. I can smell the smoke when I go out on my deck.

Mowich @ Tue Aug 01, 2017 6:57 pm

Sorry to hear about your hazy skies guys, but I have to say it is truly a pleasure that the same winds delivering the smoke to your area have also cleared our skies for the second day in a row. Both mornings we've woken to hazy skies only to see the Northerly's blow in and push all the smoke out. It reached 29' today but the next few days will temps in the low 30's. I am really grateful to be breathing better air.

Strutz @ Tue Aug 01, 2017 8:06 pm

Our hazy skies are nothing compared to what you've gone through Mowich.

I was just out on the deck and noticed incoming flights to YVR are coming in at a lower altitude than usual. Getting out of the haze well before landing I guess.

The Ashcroft Reserve fire aka the Elephant Hill fire the largest fire burning in the province is now believed to be human caused and may have been deliberately set. The RCMP have set up a tip-line for anyone with information on the cause of the fire.

"Fire officials are now saying at least two wildfires in B.C. this season were likely human-caused.

And it’s believed they were deliberately set.

The Knox Mountain fire in Kelowna and the Elephant Hill wildfire is also now thought to have been deliberately set."

"A new evacuation alert has been issued for the area southwest of Clinton as a result of the Elephant Hill wildfire.

According to the Thompson-Nicola Regional District release, “The Elephant Hill wildfire continues to pose an imminent threat to people and property.”

Earlier in the day, Fire Information Officer Heather Rice said fire had jumped Highway 97 to the west side and was climbing uphill away from the highway."

Mowich that's horrible. It bad enough when thinking people are too stupid not to realize how quickly things can go bad but to think someone deliberately set it. That's just crazy.

xerxes @ Wed Aug 02, 2017 4:23 pm

I'm sure you appreciating the clear skies Mowich but holy crap is it smoky in the Valley. It's brown and the air smells like a permanent campfire. It's even effecting my breathing and I rarely have to listen to air quality warnings.

I had an asthma attack two weeks ago because of the air quality and my chest has been tight since the smoke rolled in. It sucks.

But it also make me understand what everyone outside of the Fraser Valley has had to deal with for the last few weeks.

We've had a pretty good idea for awhile now that it was human caused, whether deliberate or not, as there has not been any lightning anywhere in that area for over a month. The Gustafsen Lake fire which is no longer a threat was also human caused.

I am truly sorry to hear that you have asthma, xerxes. My best friend Virginia has it too and is also having difficulties with her breathing. Our reprieve was short-lived as the smoke is back once again though thankfully not as dense as it has been at times. I wish you well, xerxes.
