Mowich stay safe and keep us updated. We worry

Thank you, housewife. Your concern for my well-being is much appreciated.

No change overnight. Very cool this AM and skies are not quite as smoky as yesterday. There is little chance we will be affected by the Gustafsen Lake fire now as it is being contained on the West side of HWY and it would take almost hurricane like winds to drive it back over and towards our area. We are being kept on alert due to forecasts of thunder and lightning storms in our area - though they've being saying that for a couple of days now and nothing so far. Hoping it will pass us by once more.

Also have an update on availability of grocery. I'd forgotten that there are several small grocery stores in the Interlakes/Bridge Lake area that are well-stocked as they have access for trucks from Kamloops that can use HWY 24. So that is a relief.

I have to give a shout-out to our CRD Director Margo Wagner who is doing a great job of keeping us posted daily with updates. Today she addressed garbage that people have been dropping off outside the closed gates of Forest Grove's transfer station. As the main depot in 100 Mile is no longer operating due to the evacuation, there is no one to pick up the garbage. The same is true of our dump here in Eagle Creek - I can only imagine what it looks like now. People have to realize that by dumping their garbage in this way they are creating a bear hazard. Thank you Margo.

Mowich hopefully you will not have to worry about bears on top of everything else. My sister lives in Maple Ridge and their backyard ends at a green space. There bird feeder is on a 4x4 post, she freezes some of her garbage and doesn't put any thing out till the morning of garbage day because of bears in her area. I am guessing that your area is a bit more rural and a little surprised that they would do something so stupid and dangerous. The animals are already on edge with the fires so close. So now everyone has to stay up on the fire as well as being hyper aware of animals. It really is a shame you just can't flog people anymore.

Thanks for the up date. Hopefully the weather will change to an all day rain and no lightning

BartSimpson BartSimpson:
A lot of Americans who live in small states like Massachusetts or Hawaii simply have no grasp of the scale of large expanses like what you have in Canada or even what we have in California.

I had my cousins girls out to visit last year and the two of them ambitiously informed that one particular Saturday we'd have breakfast in San Francisco, go walking in Yosemite, and then be at Disneyland for the late afternoon.

My reaction was ROTFL

Even Mrs. Bart thought it would be a day's drive and back from Vancouver to Banff until I told her that was about the same distance as San Francisco to Yellowstone.

Canada is huge and people down here just can't even begin to imagine it.

That is funny. Sometimes people look at a map and see distances between places "as the crow flies" without taking into consideration the actual route. All those pesky lakes, rivers, valleys and mountains changes everything.

I know a joke here in BC is that we don't gauge travel time in km's but in hours it takes to get there.

Strutz @ Wed Jul 12, 2017 9:58 am

Glad to hear Mowich that all is well in your area! Hope it stays that way.

A friend of ours in the Kootenay area is all good at this point but she has family in 108 that may have lost their house.

RAIN!
It's raining today.... :D

It's actually sad to be joyful about it, because I was just telling people here that if things are burning here now we're really going to be screwed if summer ever starts.

Hi Housewife - some people are just plain thoughtless and stupid, no getting around that. I live far enough away that any bears going after the garbage won't be a problem here. For those living closer to the dumps, it could be a problem. Poor bears, they don't know any better and could well end up paying with their lives for the utter stupidity of these idiots.

Same goes for the creeps that are taking advantage of the evacs by trying to break into empty homes. As if the RCMP don't have enough on their plates, now they have to do regular patrols of all evacuated areas. We are hyper-aware around here. Because most of us are preserving our gas and not traveling about - nowhere to go anyway - any vehicles in the area are immediately noticed. Our local Fire Dept is aware of anyone who decided to leave and are doing regular checks on empty homes out here.

Unfortunately, the weather is not going to cooperate at least not for another 10 days or so. So we'll just hang tight, pray for the best and get on with our lives.

Good news, just heard that both Canim Lake Store and Forest Grove will have groceries delivered today - the latter will also be getting more gas. Wasn't looking forward to what amounts to an hour or so journey over rough gravel roads to get to the Interlakes.

Life is good. :)

Watching Global news this AM and who should I see but Grace and Robert - the owners of Canim Lake Store! Grace is one of the best bakers I know serving up delicious pies, cakes, fabulous cookies and various other delicious treats.

Also heard that a crew from Fort Mac will be in Forest Grove later today with a huge delivery of supplies for local residents. They will be setting up at the Forest Grove Community Hall and are inviting all those in need to come on down. Big thanks to these folks for an awesome way of Paying It Forward.

No change in conditions here except that once again the smoke has diminished considerably overnight. It is nice and cool here this morning and we are all breathing a bit easier.

herbie @ Thu Jul 13, 2017 1:52 pm

Our town councillor just posted the local fire is 80% contained. But warned it's still "out of control".
Also road closures. But they're on the logging roads to stop all the looky-loos driving into the fire site...

??? WTF ???
Milk a situation or what?

First time we've seen blue skies in days and it is simply wonderful. Hoping all the big fluffy clouds might decide to drop some moisture on us.........but even the relief from the smoke is worth celebrating...and I am. :)

Came up Ottawa way to help some friends. You should see the fields there is standing water between the corn rows in some others are under water. It's going to be a really tough winter if they can't get hay in. Darn shame I can't send you some.

Nice to see your blue sky

That sounds very similar to the summer we experienced here in the Cariboo last year. It rained so often and so hard, the water carved small brooklets down my driveway and the path leading down to my door. I'd never seen my shallow well so full of water. The grasses in my field were over 6 ft in some places. Yet even with all the moisture we received, the lack of snow this winter has left our forests vulnerable to the least little spark. That's Nature. She giveth and she taketh away.........then she goes overboard and gives way too much. Believe me, housewife - I'd gladly sacrifice several degrees of heat for even half a day of rain...........hell, I'd settle for a gentle shower.

And far too soon it was ..........

and......

Hello Smoke.jpg
Hello Smoke.jpg [ 70.18 KiB | Viewed 486 times ]

Sunsets and sunrises, for that matter, are eerily beautiful. The smoke gives the sun a blood-red hue which casts an orange pall on the conifers that border my field giving them the appearance of being dead.

Latest news on the home-front. 100 Mile may be taken off evac order on Tuesday which means our alert will be lifted soon thereafter, for as goes one, so goes the other. What this may mean in terms of the evacuees returning home is still not certain as it may take the town a bit to get back in sound operating order. Still, it is good news and hey, I just may get my library books back on time after all. :D

Meanwhile, supplies are pouring in from all over the place. All the stores will be completely re-stocked by late tomorrow afternoon. A doctor has opened a walk-in clinic in Lone Butte. Anyone needing necessary prescription refills for their meds were assured they would be able to get them when the White Feather Health Centre on Canim Lake Reserve stepped in to help. They had anyone in need give them their information, drove down to Clearwater to pick up the meds and will be dispersing them at the clinic tomorrow. Good people in the Canim Lake Band. And a thank-you too as a close friend was in need of more blood pressure medication. The local veterinarian's office is open for pet's needs and can be accessed by the Horse Lake Road. A couple I clean for were kind enough to offer their laundry services which I quickly took them up on. Good drinking water is as close as my next door neighbor when my bottles run out and need refilling. Mail got through to Canim Lake Store today. Hey.....we're looking good and making the best of things with lots of much appreciated help from folks far and wide.
