Lots of Jews died there too - better put up a symbol for them as well. And probably even the odd wiccan - they should get get one too,

When you have a diverse population, playing favorites with religious symbols should not be on.

and Muslims, probably some Sihks, Buddhists, and Hindus.

Yep. Diversify the target rich environment for the evangelical atheists. I bet I know which one the continue to focus on though.

OK, I should have read the story. I thought this was about putting up a cross on a memorial.

This cross was on scene before 911, it's an artifact in a museum. As such, the atheists should go fuck themselves. They're just shooting themselves in the foot with the argument.

xerxes @ Mon Mar 10, 2014 6:29 pm

Not quite. It was a result of 9/11.

andyt @ Mon Mar 10, 2014 6:33 pm

Same thing. It's artifact of the event. It should be displayed. What's next, no religious artifacts of West Coast Natives in the UBC Museum of Anthropology?

Remove it. The sight is about the victims, not Religious fluffery.

The recovery teams found it on the site. Sorry if you find pieces of debris offensive.

All the more reason to remove it.

It's been a while since you introduced your usual wisdom.

Fail.

 Pick your battles people. Fundamentalist atheists are just as overbearing and obnoxious as fundamentalists of any religion.

Agreed 100%. ALL fundamentalism, including the strain among the hardcore atheists, is a curse upon the entire human race.

Following the terrorist attacks, a massive operation was launched to clear the site and attempt to find any survivors amongst the rubble. On September 13 a worker at the site named Frank Silecchia discovered a 20 foot (6.1 meter)[5] cross of two steel beams amongst the debris of 6 World Trade Center,[6] and had a cross cut from it.[7] Those with access to the site used the cross as a shrine of sorts, leaving messages on it or praying before it.[8][9]

After a few weeks within the cleanup site the cross was an impediment to nearby work, so Silecchia and others working on the project received an expedited approval from the office of New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani to erect it on a pedestal on a portion of the former plaza on Church Street near Liberty. It was moved by crane on October 3 and installed on October 4,[10][11] where it continued as a shrine and tourist attraction.[2] The cross has remained during reconstruction, but in the 2004 and 2005 filings of its site plan, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey indicated that "additional remnants" of the original World Trade Center might require removal and storage during construction of the World Trade Center Transportation Hub.[12]

I am not offended in the least. Let it be. To me, it is a token of respect. Lots of people died, lots of people helped, lots of people will suffer for the rest of their lives. If these beams in the form of a cross helps one to get a little peace of mind, it has done it's job.

I don't see it as a religious piece. To everyone who does, whatever makes you happy. To everyone who is offended... Get over yourself.

He's only upset because it didn't show up as a moon and star.

Its a historical artifact, and as such it belongs in the museum. People totally need to pick their battles, this is not one that needs to be fought.

Exactly. Even if you're against religion, the fact that the cross took up such spiritual significance and brought comfort to both survivors, and rescue workers during the 9-11 cleanup and recovery efforts makes it a historical artifact as much as a spiritual one.

I wonder if the same individuals against this cross would be against putting the first Gutenberg Bible in a museum too.

“We’re arguing for equal treatment in some way, whatever that might be,” Kagin said after the hearing.

Maybe we can have a corner of the museum where nothing is there and call it the atheist monument.

Guy_Fawkes @ Tue Mar 11, 2014 8:42 am

Why do people care? There are so many other things to be worried about.
