Isn't the Coquihalla highway part of the 1? Then I do. It's a toll road (or at least it used to be).

Nope, where the Coquihalla starts (just south of Kamloops) the TCH splits off and heads west.

Oh, right, sorry, my bad :P

What are the rates now? In $$$$

Somewhere in the realm of outrageous. 8O

But, all kidding aside, someone should take Hahn back to grade school and explain simple economics to him.

If you charge more than the market can bear, you go broke, but, if you charge a fair price for you're product you make money and stay in business because of volume. :?

Maybe someone could take him to Walmart or Costco so he could see this theory in action.

Blackball Line's MV Coho which runs between Victoria and Port Angeles is a plain no frills ferry whose fares are higher than BC ferries ($6.00 for a bike vice $2.00) and $55.00 for car and driver vice $45.00 for BC Ferries) They get a lot of traffic and I doubt they have the subsidies that BC Ferries, so, in the end, maybe we ain't paying fair market value yet though the one main difference is people have to take the Ferry off the Island because it's an island.

It wouldn't hurt to try that business model for awhile and see how it goes. They've cut fares for specific periods of time and seen an increase in ridership that corresponded to those cuts so wouldn't it make sense to cut the fares back, increase ridership and avoid having to resort to huge fare hikes.

There is no way we are ever going to have a Ferry System that even comes close to breaking even and every logical thinking person knows that, but what David Hahn and the Liberals with their slight of hand tricks like privatization with public money, are doing to it and by extension Islanders is nothing short of criminal.

Fares should be reasonable and yes I'll say it, subsidized to some extent, just like every thing else the government runs is.

BTW building super ferries that carry more cars, cost more to run and then raising fares so no one will travel on them is fucking insanity at the basest level.

A bridge to the island while possible is a horrible idea. We cant seem to sort the traffic issues we have now, can you imagine if our population grew because then people would be able to commute to Vancouver?

Or worse the cost of housing would sky rocket yet again as more people would move here from Vancouver driving our already unmanagable real estate out of reach for the average person.

Those of us who enjoy the island do not want to see our way of life ruined by a bridge.

The biggest issue with BC Ferries is a mismanagement of funds and unsustainable salaries and bonuses for the top 2% of employess!!...just my opinion

Don't forget that a vast majority of the Islands economy comes from tourism. As Sapper suggested, we could cash in from the day trippers using a bridge.

Commuting to Vancouver from the Island would be like commuting to Vancouver from Chilliwack, regardless of where the bridge is built. A small portion of the population would, but you wont see people moving there in droves in order to work in Vancouver, while living somewhere else. I also don't think it would cause the population of the island to skyrocket. The population of the Island is already now over 800 000 and will likely be over 1 million in the next 5-10 years.

If we don't find a way to be able to provide goods and services for the population growth beyond the inadequate ferry services, then the cost of owning property will be the least of your concern when it pales to $2-$3/litre gasoline and meat being sold at the market for $10+ per pound.

Fuck that. There's too many people on my Island as it is...

Shuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuush.

It's getting to freaking crowded up here now.

BTW,WTF do you think I left Victoria?

Lower house prices, with pretty much all the amenities will likely spell doom for we poor people North of the Malahat.
