The fact that you feel deprived because you cannot see someone you find unsavoury killed is more disgusting to me than murder. Hysteria is the mother of the world's most heinous social crimes.

By whose standards???

It has become the world standard. The US is the only Western country to still employ it (and many states have banned it).

Look at the map. The blue countries have banned capital punishment.

Death penalty aside, I can't think of any non-blue country I would really want to live in (US included).

You forgot about Japan...

See now I always thought that Japan was an Oriental country, not a Western one which is what I specifically said.

when a rapist then a deliberate cold hearted killer of a person ( in this case a little child) is known to be the killer and no doubt that he did it then capital punishment is the only answer. It is not a deterrent but to save other lives . never againn should some one be allowed to harm another person again. People like him and clifford olson should be put to sleep.

A real pack of moral compasses, those fellows.

Japan is often placed in the western category due its tight alignment with the United States and its advanced level of development.

Perhaps they do deserve to die, but under whose authority? Whose going to pull the proverbial trigger realistically? You? A victim's relative? What a lovely society to live in eh?

Again I must point out the utter lack of intellectual continuity in the conservative discourse which says that the government should not be allowed to take our money, but should be allowed to take our lives.

The people who assert this confuse the meaning of the term 'occidental' or its more Anglo-Saxon synonym 'western' with the status of 'developed industrial nation'. The two are not the same thing. Kuwait is rich and developed too, with close ties to Western allies, but they are not considered a Western country by any means.

The Japanese are issuant of a culture completely foreign to the one shared amongst real Occidental nations. The fact that the Japanese like to dress like us and buy our crappy music doesn't really change that.

you can not let this guy out on the street. You want him with the public?

There's a big difference between not wanting a sicko on the streets and thinking that the government should kill him.

You're right if you accept your definition as definitive, but the term "West" has been one that has always been used loosely to group different nations together.

Dictionary.com - the only definitions of the word 'WEST' mentioning countries are the 4th and 5th.

$1:
4. (initial capital letter) the western part of the world, as distinguished from the East or Orient; the Occident.
5. (initial capital letter) the non-Communist countries of Western Europe and the Americas.

You will never find a dictionary of the English language defining this usage of West any differently.

If, in fact, a murderer was to be put in a cell with absolutely no comforts, a small slot for 'very basic nutrition to be passed to them, a hole in the floor in which they could relieve themselves, (or not), and that cell welded shut only to be opened and 'made ready' for the next prisoner upon their demise, I would definitely be in favor of the 'life in prison' concept. I don't think that it would be too long before 'all lifers' would be championing the death penalty!

So, you would rather torture someone until they begged to die? Shoot the bastards with a 25 cent bullet, humanely pout them out of their misery and use the mega dollars that would have been spent on torturing them over 25+ years for noble efforts.

China does it and their civilization was well developed at a time when ours was still clinging from branches with furry tails.

Well, I never thought I would see the day when a Conservative would be using a Communist country as a model for Canada's justice system.
