Yes but the Liberals didn't win, if somehow a party won with only seats in the city metro areas that would be a concern. plus they won other seats outside cities, just not huge geograhical areas. Do maritimers not count?

I think the real story is that the governening party failed to break into the 3 large city cores yet again.

The Liberals will be back and have seats across the board, lets Hope they all can make this last for at least 2 years though.

martin14 @ Wed Oct 15, 2008 1:56 am

Maritimes do count, as do all Canadians.. even the 30,000 in the Yukon :)

the Maritimes used to be a gimme for the Libs, they have lost that.
Quebec will be a problem for a while i guess, the Bloc should never been
allowed to form.
the real fight used to be in Ontario, but the Libs have lost that too,
outside Toronto.

I think the real story is that the Libs are now a fringe party,
and need to do some serious rebuilding, on all levels, not just at the party
leader level. Dion should resign immediately.

I'll expect a recount in Edmonton, only 400 vote win :)

All this from a former Trudeau/Chretien supporter......
and im also happy Justin won :)

The Liberals got 1.1 million more votes and 39 more seats that the NDP and this was the worst election ever for the Liberals. That being said... fringe is something that the greens don't even deserve let alone the official opposition. You overstate your case.

martin14 @ Wed Oct 15, 2008 2:14 am

you have your opinion Scape, i have mine.
I look at the big map, the Libs are nowhere to be found.
I can understand you and other Libs aren't very happy today,

but I hope you all realize that the Libs are in serious trouble.
Hell, the Cons did ok even in Vancouver.

You can talk lots and lots about seats and votes,
but I see a party that can only attract big city votes,
and that is not Canada.

The Natural Party to Govern ? not anymore...

Scape @ Wed Oct 15, 2008 2:38 am

A low water mark for the Liberals does not make for the end of the world for them. If what happened to the Liberals tonight was on par with what happened in 1994 to the Progressive Conservatives you would have a point.

martin14 @ Wed Oct 15, 2008 2:53 am

yep, but the Libs are getting closer to the 84 numbers..

ok, do nothing to change, and what what happens in the next election.

If the Liberals are too blind to recognize there is a problem,
then dont cry for the next time.. or this one.

All that has been proven is that Its impossible for Harper to ever get a majority even with all the cards in his favour. And we have wasted over $250 million tax payer dollars to determine this.

Uhh....no. No matter how you try and spin it, what it has really revealed is Canadians don't trust any political party....period. If this had been about Harper and the Conservatives, they would not have increased their numbers in parliament and there would have been a Liberal government. This is the Canadian people saying to ALL politicians, that we don't trust you, but we think the Conservatives will do the least amount of damage to us, based on their performance to date. No one wants to rock the boat.

A good example is some Liberal strongholds in the lower mainland being taken by the Cons. They don't want another green shaft thrust upon them.

Not to mention that each election costs 300 million dollars. Yeah, let's just keep having elections at that price tag until Canadians just give up on themselves and vote Harper.... Sounds really conservative.

That little bit of bovine political snobbery sounds really stupid.

It has nothing to do with Conservatism, but it does have a lot to do with functioning government.

If you wish to delve into politics, then how about the left showing greater compromise in order to have government function and we taxpayers not waste money paying MPs to act like kids at recess in the parliamentary playground.

What is the real figure for this election I am hearing reports between 250 million and 300 million

In some ways it's best - now they can find a leader that will unite both the party and the country.

$1:
The cost of the 2000 general election, including the partial reimbursement of election expenses to eligible candidates and political parties and the maintenance of the National Register of Electors since the 1997 general election, was $200.6 million.

The above is dated, but it sounds like 250 - 300 million is right on.

Some of the grapes seem a little sour today.
And what's with the foul language, tritium...?
Only ignorance and immaturity produce foul language.
Want to pick which one, or should we blame both ?

bootlegga @ Wed Oct 15, 2008 7:13 am

tritium tritium:
Another minority government... wow another waste of Canadian taxpayer money.. about 10 million.

3rd election in four years and he broke his promise not to have one so soon.

If it were only $10 million, it wouldn't be that bad. The bill we actually be between $250 - $300 million, just like the past two elections...yeah, the status quo!
