American shows can be produced for several million per episode, while major Canadian shows are produced for several million per season. That equates to better special effects, better writers, better sets, and in the case of game/reality shows, better prizes. That all adds up to popularity when it comes to ratings.
I'd say he's wrong about our stuff being crap, because we export an awful lot of it internationally, and not just to the US, UK or Australia. If he's right, then a lot of other people like the 'crap' we make.
There was a great CBC miniseries a while back about a demented hockey dad--frickin hilarious. That was the only decent thing I ever remember seeing on CBC.

I disagree about the CBC in general. Some great shows have come out of the Mother Corp. Lately they seem to get going and then for some unknown reason cancelled.
