Economists calculate hidden price of tax relief
Proculation Proculation:
Like I stated in another thread, if fair is better than we need a Flat Tax: a unique marginal tax rate for everybody.
Flat Tax is not "Fair" in any sense of the term.

Please enlighten us how this is not the case.
Wait, I got it! If everyone pays an equal proportion of their wealth into the system, then those at the lowest rungs of society will receive the greatest comparative benefit for the amount of money they pay in. It discriminates against the rich!

That's what I thought until yesterday until Proculation actually gave me some numbers to try (in the other thread), and when I ran them against the current structure, found that the poor were not burdened by a higher rate as a result of a higher exemption. - that in fact nobody need pay a penny more, if the rates and exemption are set properly.

Which thread? I would like to see these numbers, if you would be so kind as to link it or just cut-n-paste.

This post is where Proculation offered a flat tax system of 20% with an exemption of $20 000. I ran it against our current taxes in a spreadsheet which I've attached here. I was surprised at the results.

You generally stated that more fair = better. I was indicating that such is not necessarily the case.

It may not be fair but it is equitable. Every taxpayer pays the same rate, no loopholes. Because if you honestly believe people making six figures a year or more haven't found every possible loophole to avoid paying their "fair share" I have some swampland for sale, dirt cheap!

Nice graph. That corresponds to things I saw.
Plus, like 2cdo said, the rich will pay more taxes because they won't try to find loopholes to avoid taxes 'cause there won't be any. 20% flat. You would be able to pay your taxes simply, without the help of an accountant and all that. That bad for them but good for everyone else.
Very interesting tables. Puts a figure to cost of social programs more than indicates tax buts benefit the better off. I saved four tables for my statistics file.
I can't get these Paint images to come up at the right size.
This CCPA graph shows the all taxes vary between 31% and 36% depending on the decile of family income. Taxes are flatish already. Government taxes are 40% of GDP so the calculations, which are awkward, are close.
I read a book keeping manual by an accountant and he says accounting is about accounting rules and taxes rules. The taxes are about all manners of social initiatives and what he call voodoo economic initiatives. Politicians won't be gining these up any time soon.
