Lives are saved every day because somewhere there's a database that says John Doe has a rifle. True story.

To keep a dog in a city you actually have to get a dog license. To buy and own a firearm you still have to get a firearms license.
Broken analogy. You don't get licensed to own a dog. You register the dog.
You buy a dog license, look it up. You're the one that brought up the comparison, of which there really isn't one. You have to take a federal safety course and pass it to purchase a firearm, as well as pass a criminal check. You purchase a dog license to help pay for city services pertaining to dogs, and so they can contact you when fido escapes. This is actually a stupid comparison, much like the one about having to register a car. I've actually owned cars that weren't registerd, and I didn't go to jail. It's not against the law, just don't try driving it on a public road.
It is not a stupid comparison. If you own two dogs, you register both of them. It is not unreasonable to require a registry of lethal firearms. It is unreasonable to differentiate between short guns and long guns when a long gun can become a short gun using a hacksaw. You have to register your dog for safety reasons, same as your gun.
I don't have to register my dog in Montreal. Are we some kind of rednecks in MONTREAL ?

You know what ? You can also buffer the serial number on your hacksawed gun rendering it doublely illegal !
Those are things criminals do. Not registered and licensed owners of firearms.

Yes you do.

A tag for each pet
It is prohibited to keep a puppy or kitten of more than 90 days old without registering it and obtaining a tag. A tag must be obtained within fifteen (15) days of acquiring the animal or after the day when the animal reaches the age of three (3) months, whichever time is longer.

Why don't the Feds sell the thing to Quebec if they want it so bad?

lol well, never heard of it and neither have the people I know. You put a necklace and a tag on it to get it back if it's lost and you keep it on a leash when walking it. But, anyway, those are only municipal rules. It's not a criminal offence. That was the point. A dog is a living animal by its own. A firearm is not. It's comparing apple and orange, as you should have realized.
If you train a dog to attack someone on the street, the dog will get seized and you will be arrested. That's a criminal offence. It's extremely uncommon and I really don't think that's why you *have* to *register* your dog.

Alberta would have to pay it for us, that's why

yeah but you don't goto jail if you don't register your dog. The SWAT team won't kick in your door at 2am because you failed to put a little tag on your dog's collar. The same can't be said about an unregistered firearm.
You can't compare civil and CRIMINAL law, they are different beasts.
