I'm going to approach this from a different angle. Seeing as we have not deployed any of our CF-18's to Afghanistan to provide ground support to the troops, and won't be anytime soon, why don't we forget about buying fighters! 8O

Other than Kosovo our CF-18's have done little more than train for near 30 years. There seems to be little chance of any party deploying fighters except possibly in CAP role, it seems that the money could be better spent on more tactical and strategic transport. Another option would be more transport helicoptors, both light and heavy, possibly attack helicoptors. (Assuming any government would send attack helicoptors when they won't send fighters!)

Not meant to be a flame, I think we should have fighters. but we should also have the will to use them if required, and I honestly don't see that from any party. :?

We don't deploy our F-18 because they need modifications.... if we purchase now... we should be able to deploy shortly after we received them -> all depending on training provided to aircrew and groundcrew.

The RAF recently bought 232 Eurofighters.

Why doesn't Canada buy some?

"Eurofighters."

You answered your own question

Also, hasn't Canada already invested a few million in the research of the JSF?

Yes, and Canadian firms will have a hand in producing components for it.

I've long favored using inexpensive platforms for sovereignty missions and regular patrols while saving the expensive platforms for when the balloon goes up.

Were I involved in the decision making process I'd be developing/purchasing inexpensive propeller driven aircraft that can hang missiles on the rails for interdicting coastal shipping and most jet aircraft while investing in a few cutting edge aircraft for serious business.

80 of these high end fighters are a good start, but they could be easily augmented with 100 to 200 low end fighters which would economically extend Canada's reach and presence.

Not much coming from someone who can't even figure out how to log in.

Has Canada got some?

The development of the JSF is funded by the United States, United Kingdom (the big two), Italy, The Netherlands, Canada, Norway, Denmark, Australia and Turkey.

The RAF may buy a couple of hundred of them. What about Canada?

The Phoon and the Lightning are both great platforms. Just different design concepts.

I would normally defer to Mario on the air side of things, but I see a different role for the F-35 than was envisioned for the F-18 when we bought them. The 18's were bought to stop Bear bombers coming over the pole and really needed that second engine as a safety for flying in the remote areas of this country. The big set piece battles in the Arctic skies are not something in our immediate future. Battlefield interdiction is.

Good call. The CF in 'stan could stand to have their own air support, couldn't they?

Yes it would be nice if we had our own air support but the cyclones aren't even part of the equation for Afghanistan.

I can see why they went with the F-35. It's about half the cost of the Eurofighter and it is more versitile (it can do many different setups).
