French Canadians angry at Hollywood
Clogeroo Clogeroo:
Maybe Quebec should just learn how to speak English?
Regina Regina:
What do all the Quebecois speak when they're in Florida for the winter?
Spanish.
Brenda Brenda:
Do I read correctly, that Quebecers want Hollywood to dub it in Quebecois?
We dub Hollywood movies to Dutch ourselves (or subtitle it), so what is the point here??? Why can't they do it themselves?
I am confused

Quebec does have actors who dub movies and tv shows in French. The producers chose to have the work done in France, and that seems to be the complaint here.

To repeat the previous comment, it is hilarious that the Quebecers are complaining that the film was dubbed in proper French and not in their quaint little dialect. I'm wondering how this story is being received in France?
My guess is there's a lot of French forums with a lot of these being posted:
When the film is dubbed in french in Quebec, it doesn't use Quebec slang. It uses international french like other movies dubbed in france. We can't see any accent.
The two problems are:
1- Some expression translated from english to france french doesn't mean anything here. (Je vais nické ta mère !)
2- It's also a lobbying made by the union of actors here in Quebec to have more jobs.
Even if the proposed bill is being made by my party (ADQ), i'm against it.
First, the percentage of movies being dubbed in Quebec is always increasing (from 10% some years ago to 30% now).
Second, it's not the government's role to do that. It's the union's role to put pressure on the producers.

That's a great idea!

Most Quebecers are bilingual.

Most Quebecers are bilingual.
So why not just have English made films in English?
The French dubbing of these films are done in Montreal by "Bellvue Pathe". French Canadian actors get well paid for the process. Often the whole thing gets Quebec government funding.
Sounds like separatist saber rattling BS to me. Gee could the St Jean Baptist weekend be coming up soon......hmm!
Seems these stories always come out this time of year.

Brenda Brenda:
Isn't this an opportunity for commercial companies then? I mean, why would the government (provincial or national) be any party in this?
And there is what drives me nuts Brenda. Far too many people in this country see the govt as a solution to everything and not as the hinderence that all govts are, by their very nature.

who dubs a film and IF that film get's dubbed, is decided by the owners of the film. That would be why the Quebec industy is not happy with hollywood and is also asking for Government help. In that aspect, they are not doing anything different then any other Canadian individual or company wanting work from another country. It is not unusual to requast government intervention to help.

I agree it is not unusual, but that does not stop it from being utterly stupid. When I need something done I am very unlikely to ask for help from the most inefficient source available to me.

Then I imagine the next time the cons go on a buisness building junket in some far off resort...I mean country, you'll be complaining?
