I'm not at all surprised by the verdict. In fact, when this story first broke, I was the first one to say that it sounded like he's schizophrenic and probably had a really bad psychotic break. Surprise! That's the verdict!

It's very unfortunate that he had to cut off someone's head to get put into a mental hospital, but it's against the law and considered inhumane to lock someone up indefinitely without some sort of criminal or dangerously violent activity.

I think your sig is very apt in this situation in describing people's reactions to the case.

Come on you people didn't see shit like this coming!!! The policy for the last decades have been too place these paranoid schizos on the street. Conservative values would dictate if they can work and be productive ..that's all that counts, well surprise surprise..you place the nuts on the street for your selfish reasons and then you plug there brain full of conservative propaganda with your anti everything brochures..in this case and time anti youth ones..and then you wonder why the schizo went bonkers..

Placing these people in institutions would cost too much money they didn't earn and those are quote lefty values unquote. Free medicine that would help or at least sedate the schizo..sorry no money for that but here is a bribe for a vote. There have been a few cases recently reflecting the "I dunno what to do about mentally challenged people"...well guess what they are comin for you. All conservative supporters should feel guilt from what they have created with there uncompassionate selfish values.

As far as the not criminally responsible part goes...the real criminals are the ones that support dumping the criminally insane people out on the street in the first place. There are to many cases involving conservatives and there lack of knowledge in legal areas. They always use there ignorance of the law as an excuse to break laws also and I have to admit they sure have a problem interpreting law something they have admitted to.

So this is a real case of you made your bed to sleep in...I hope you neocons are satisfied with the results...expect more! Just like they cowardly send other peoples children to fight there war on paranoia..the same they will let loose the nutjobs on the public...Suck it up Dummy Con(servative)uck.

Akhenaten Akhenaten:
First: You can blame the rigid philosophy of psychiatry and their dependence and blind faith in the idea that every mental disorder can either be cured or controlled with a pill.
Uh... They don't think that.

$1:
Second: no doubt the guy is 'crazy' but that doesn't mean he didn't know what he did was wrong. He stated as much both when he was arrested and upon his first court date.
Did he know at the time? Could he even control himself at the time?

Well yes sir, with respect they do. It's a common critizism. This is opposite of psychology which depends much less on medication and more on therapy. Psychiatry's entire basis is on the idea that medication can fix these issues. Both are legitamate disciplines but politicians and program planners prefer spending a little on medication instead of a lot for years and years of therapy. They also LOVE the idea that they wont have to pay for these people to be institutionalized.

From wiki:
$1:
While the medical specialty of psychiatry utilizes research in the field of neuroscience, psychology, medicine, biology, biochemistry, and pharmacology,[4] it has generally been considered a middle ground between neurology and psychology
...
Psychiatrists also differ from psychologists in that they are physicians and the entirety of their post-graduate training is revolved around the field of medicine.

Further:
$1:
In a time of economic constraint, a "pill and an appointment" has dominated treatment. ”
—APA president Steven S. Sharfstein, Big Pharma and American Psychiatry: The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly[18]

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biopsychiatry_controversy
(scroll to "Economic influences on psychiatric practice")

In terms of blame, as I pointed out Li was already institutionalized for 4 days and the psychiatists there figured once he's on his meds he's good to go. This is a very common scenario.

$1:
Did he know at the time? Could he even control himself at the time?

He stated so, both at his arrest and his first court appearence. Remember 'crazy' alone doesn't buy you out of prison. Unable to tell that what you did was wrong will get you out of prison.

Cheers
Akh

Have you ever been to a psychiatrist? Every one that I've ever been to has shoved pills on me as a knee-jerk reaction, when I didn't really need them.

All I got was "and how does that make you feel?"
No pills whatsoever!

Crazy Canadian justice system... People literally get away with murder!!!!

Yogi @ Thu Mar 05, 2009 11:58 am

It's no secret that I am a fervent supporter of bringing back the death penalty in cases of no doubt. Where there exists even the slightest doubt of guilt, the person be sent to prison for the rest of their natural life. In the event that person is proven not guilty they should be compensated $1,000,000 up front as well as an additional $1,000,000 per year for each year of incarceration.
This case clearly falls into the category of no doubt. Forget the reason why!
It is not likely that Li will ever be released back into society. Though that possibility does exist! Why else would 'we' be putting him in a hospital for treatment? To what end then? If he is never to be released why should 'he' not be administered one final injection?

Joy! Some immigrant comes to Canada, hacks a Canadians head off and get to live a cushy life in a mental facility that we ALL have to pay for.

Sick and so wrong. Where is the fricken outrage????

RUEZ @ Thu Mar 05, 2009 12:11 pm

This man should never walk the street again. I don't care if it's in a jail or a psychiatric facility. He needs to pay for taking that young mans life.

Revoke his citizenship! He's done enough harm in this country, why should we pay to look after garbage like this?

LOL
You can't revoke citizenship. The moment an immigrant becomes a citizen, (s)he is Canadian. Period. No matter what nationality (s)he had before.
