Canada has also adopted a number of political and economic measures against the Government of Zimbabwe. These include: suspension of CIDA funding to Zimbabwe’s government; a policy of not welcoming to Canada senior members of the Government of Zimbabwe; suspension of Zimbabwean participation in Canadian peacekeeping training courses; suspension of Zimbabwe’s eligibility for the Export Development Corporation's export financing programs; and, restriction of export of military goods to Zimbabwe.

We simply don't trade with them so all we can do is shut off aid. Considering Africa is such a sinkhole, I'm for shutting all aid off to Arica.

Kenmore: I guess if the Libs were in we would be shmoozing the dictators, eh? Like castro, Pinochette and the Chicoms.

So where's Bob Geldoff or Mandella when someone needs to speak out against opression?

Any guess as to what Mr Harper's "strong measures" will be? So far the Brits have, as I said, banned the country's cricket team. The Queen has taken away his knighthood. What do you think Canada should do?

George Bush said America would enact an arms embargo, which makes me ask the question, why did they wait until now to do that?

Not all African countries are anywhere near as bad off as Zimbabwe. In fact, a number of them have growing economies and democratic governments. The problem with aid money to anywhere, and the reason why such a thing is a sinkhole, is that it is essentially offering to loan money in order to pay off a loan whose interest alone is so large that no country needing any aid money could ever afford to pay it off, and most of that money just ends up feeding the despots that caused the problem in the first place. We need to stop sending money and start sending education.

Nothing Canada could do by itself will matter much. And in fact, listening to representatives of other African nations there doesn't seem to be much appetite for doing anything of consequence. "Forcing Mugabe to hold a fair election" is really an empty comment. How do you bring it about? By force? Don't see that happening.

Thanks to China, ready to block any sanctions from the UN but quite happy to supply the butcher with small arms and munitions, I think any direct action would be a bloodbath.
China is now Zimbabwe's main trading partner, like in Sudan, Burma, and North Korea.. Notice any sort of similarities here?

Thay are meeting right now in Egypt. Don't expect "sanctions".

$1:
African leaders gathering for a summit have greeted President Robert Mugabe as a "hero", dashing hopes that Zimbabwe's regime would come under immediate international pressure.

MUGABE
