You can hardly call it bias when we did it and you never have.
Please give me an example of the Liberals stopping any buyouts of Canadian companies.

Look up a little government organization called FIRA, it stopped plenty of mergers and acquisitions...disbanded by Mulroney, Harper's right wing predecessor.

This is just like the time he was crowing over Harpers impeding plan to add seats to parliment (albeit widening the seat parity against Ontario) exhorting that we would never see such an act under the Liberals until I busted his ass showing that it not only happened twice under the Chretien Liberals but happened correctly using the impartial procedure already established to adjust seats per population reviewed on a semi-annual basis.

He was clearly wrong then too but just like in that thread, the Trudeau thread, the SAR thread, the accusing me of lurking drunk thread ..... he won't admit his errors and hasn't got the character to apologize when he is proven wrong yet again.

This is no surprise. This is Harper's retirement plan. I like the way the Conservatives lie about it too. They sell off our country and say it's so people will invest in us. Yeah, it's like when one of their suit-clad Conservative buddies "invests" in 14 year old prostitute.

no need to worry lazy socialists don't own any of it.

Wont it be nice when we are completely taken over by foreigners.. The taliban would love to have ownership of the Alberta Oil Sands... More over what they would do is buy up Canadian industries and business and shut them down.. putting Canadians out of work.. gee has Czar harper got any other bright ideas...?

Taliban buying the oilsands?

Look's like the Kenmore meltdown is going to come sooner then expected.

kenmore @ Fri Sep 12, 2008 2:32 pm

No meltdown here... enjoying this.. trying to earn some more warning percentage..
you figure out who has the most money in the world... its the middle east..and that's who would be first in line to buy anything in Canada.. Mulroney made the statement "Canada is open for business" and almost bankrupted the country.. worst recession in years. Took the libs 10yrs to turn it around.. then we had a major surplus, which little stevie harper blew away in 2yrs of his minority.. so ya vote for him.? not!

Allowing more foreign ownership would open up the cellphone industry to some actual competition. It's one of the reasons Canadians are overcharged so much.

Awww Derby's pissed off. ROTFL

Didn't I hear the political panel on the CBC National last night agree this needs to be done. I wasn't watching just listening off and on. But yeah, I think that was the conclusion.

So let me get this straight...

You straight up tell us that you were only listening off and on...

Yet somehow, you come to a definitive conclusion about the overall message, based on mere tidbits of information? Riiiiiiiiight...

The other example they mention was the airlines, who would also benefit from foreign ownership. That is, unless you're all happy with Air Canada..

Sorry. Didn't see that link on the other page.

Looking at that link and the others, I'm not really seeing any examples of where they blocked a sale. Here's a list of major foreign sales and purchases from 06 to 98 and I don't see any evidence of government action.

http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/mergers/

Infact, looking back at the MDA block:

$1:
The $1.3 billion bid for the space operations of MacDonald Dettwiler and Associates is the first takeover rejected under Canada's 23-year-old foreign investment law.

If the past Liberal governments were protecting is from foreign takeovers, why is it not shown here or in the link I show above? How can you say the Liberals are safe guarding Canada from foreign and the CPC are not when all evidence shows the exact opposite?

There's lots of bitching that MDA lost money because of the block and I'm wondering when you folks will blame the CPC for that one too.

Sorry, Boots, I'm not seeing any examples there, just politics and more fear mongering. Let's see if you can find a nice jucy one like MDA and I'll give extra points if they donated to the Conservative party of the day.

Read it again. By setting rules that prevented wholesale takeover they didn't need to make a token gesture of half-heartedly blocking a single solitary sale.

They have plenty of domestic level competition (like cable) that was locked out though. Shouldn't that be tried before we sell the country to the Chinese?

ridenrain @ Fri Sep 12, 2008 4:36 pm

Since this thread is about groundless fear mongering, I might as well start the avalanche by mentioning water sales. Didn't Quebec want to start that one?

How long should we wait? We've been saddled with useless system access fees and various crap for 20 years. Various studies have shown that Canada is behind the world when it comes to competitive cell phone plans. If the locals can't or won't do it I say give someone else a chance.

Reverend Blair @ Fri Sep 12, 2008 4:41 pm

Groundless fear-mongering? You mean like Harper's claim that changing to a more efficient economy would cause a national unity crisis? Where did he get that anyway? Is it the meth? It is, isn't it?
