Layton hasn't really a clue.....he likely thinks the head is the Poop deck..........

If he and his really believe this AGW crap why don't they just STFU........instead of killing trees by making dumb statements.

$1:
Layton criticized the government's decision to buy up to eight medium ice-strengthened military patrol vessels, instead of three heavy ice-breakers it promised during the last election, saying it is "misguided."

The Arctic countries have 10 years to map and file their claims for international consideration. Experts say that mapping the floor of the ocean would require one or two heavy ice-breakers, which Canada does not have.

"To exercise our sovereignty, Canada needs vessels that can go anywhere, anytime, in those areas we claim as our own," said Layton, calling for an immediate increase in government funding for scientific research that would gather evidence to support Canada's Arctic claim.

"Rather than buying military 'slushbreakers,' we should be building new polar icebreakers . . . to break ice for commercial vessels, help re-supply northern communities, maintain navigation devices, provide search and rescue, and support research scientists," Layton said.

I think he has a point kids.

That he does. I'd much prefer having 2 ICEBREAKERS as compared to having 4 or 5 slushcrushers

Not really he objects to the slushcrusher because they are Navy.

His preference for ICEBREAKERS is based on his notion that they will have pretty flowers painted on them.

Mapping the floor of the arctic ocean is something you can do in a zodiac then? C'mon, if Harper proposed this idea you'd be all over it. The NDP leader has a point and your not rebutting his point with reason but with emotion. You will lose fights trying to use heart over your head.

EyeBrock @ Sun Aug 05, 2007 3:03 pm

Oh behave Taliban Jack!

How disingenuous is this? Mr anti-military asking we assert our sovereignty?

Just so hypocritical.

Scape @ Sun Aug 05, 2007 3:06 pm

The NDP are anti-military. They think it should be a home guard and a non-priority as far as budgets are concerned. That has nothing to do with the fact we have no way to stake our claim in the north. We have 10 years and the clock is ticking.

Oh, SNAP!

Streaker @ Sun Aug 05, 2007 3:10 pm

Why the hell are so many people in the military so unwilling to stand up for Canadian sovereignty?

SHAME!!

I agree, Harper did say quite early on that he was going to boost our Arctic presence. The time is nigh to deliver on this one politically. He could do himself a lot of good by being very proactive in our Arctic. Unlike Layton who will never be a PM.
