They are opposing for the sake of opposing, whether it's Iggy or the puppet masters.

There are times when the Loyal Opposition ought to remember that the loyalty they owe is to Canada and not their party ideologies.

$1:
Among other things, they could be detained for a year without assured access to review and, even if their refugee claim is approved, they would not be eligible to apply for permanent residence status for five years.

Liberal Irwin Cotler, a former justice minister, said those and other provisions violate the Charter of Rights and Freedoms, a position echoed by refugee groups and the Canadian Bar Association's immigration law division.

"The flaws in Bill C-49 cannot be rectified by modest amendments," Gordon Maynard of the Canadian Bar Association said in a statement, adding that it breaches not only the charter but also Canada's international obligations.

That seems to be the issue driving the opposition. It was the issue when Iggy supported it too.

Gunnair @ Wed Dec 01, 2010 9:37 pm

Let it go to a charter challange. Fact is, people seem to forget that while those illegal refugees are sitting in a detainment centre getting three squares a day, roof over their heads, and clean sheets, they are safe and not being persecuted in their home country.

They are safe, which meets their needs, while we ensure they are actually refugees, which meets our needs.

Yep, he's a liberal all right

Opposing for the sake of opposing. Yeah, that's effective.

He's not opposed just to be opposed. He was for it in the first reading wasn't he? He's opposed because because his party and the rest of the opposition told him to be opposed.

I agree, but that wont happen anytime soon.

In the meantime, we continue to fool around.

Don't expect that to happen anytime soon.

I agree Curt, I thought he was all for this all that time ago in September 2010.

The only problem with this bill is that it doesn't go far enough - it only applies to people coming in boats, when most of our phony refugees fly here.

$1:
In its current form, the legislation punishes "the victims, not the criminals," Ignatieff said, calling the bill "unsalvageable."
Man has he got his head up his ass - what, the smugglers are forcing the "refugees" to come to Canada?

I'm just glad that the "nobody wants an election" stuff isn't being said this time. Why Iggy chose this issue to grow a backbone, I don't know. I don't even care.

Thanos @ Thu Dec 02, 2010 12:01 pm

The Liberals and Dippers can smell votes in the bilge hold of those boats. And that's the only reason they're doing this. That they're effectively helping to eliminate the government's ability/duty/right to police who can and who can't become Canadian citizens clearly means nothing to them.

EyeBrock @ Thu Dec 02, 2010 12:24 pm

The polls after the MV Tamil Cheater landed in BC would say that a great majority of Canadians are all for a tougher stance on illegal immigrants. The millions of legal immigrants in Canada will be for clamping down on the cheats.

This is a lose-lose for Iggy.

$1:
"Mandatory detention is just not in the Canadian tradition. We think it's not Charter-proof, as a result."

The bill would increase the minimum fines and jail terms for those caught bringing illegal aliens to Canada.

It would also affect the people being smuggled. Refugees could spend as much as a year in detention facilities while their claims were being processed.

In its current form, the legislation punishes "the victims, not the criminals," Ignatieff said, calling the bill "unsalvageable."

...

While the Liberals say there is no point in trying to amend the bill to make it acceptable, Ignatieff said he is still willing to work with the Tories on "a bill that works."

Makes sense to me. Why pass a bill into law that will just make more work for an already clogged court system?

If Harper (and the Conservatives) really want this bill to move forward, they'll work with the Liberals on it - just like they did on the Afghan training mission. But something tells me that Harper will use this opportunity come election time to score political points instead.

The more things change, the more they stay the same...

EyeBrock @ Thu Dec 02, 2010 3:53 pm

He (Harper) sees public anger on the illegal immigrant situation Boots. If Iggy isn't careful he will be soundly out- manoeuvred on this issue. He's going to be portrayed as supporting illegal migrants.
The Tamils 'aint exactly everybody’s favourite minority group in Ontario. Storming the highways etc….

This is all politics, as I have pointed out before, 30,000 illegals a year hit our airports and this bill won’t alter that one bit. It’s a catchy attack-ad headline. “Iggy supports illegal migrant boats” etc.

Spring election?

Good to see the slave trade is still safe in Canada.
