This goes beyond being careful into the realm of pure stupidity. Where will it end?
gel consistency items can be used to make a bomb on the board... i wouldn refrain from calling it pure stupidity...
It's stupidity. I can make a bomb out of cornflakes. And as for the detonator? Lets not forget you're still allowed to have matches.
I can also make a zipgun out of a ballpoint pen,
a knife out of a pencil,
see my point?
I'm not saying there's no threat, but I do not believe banning every possible thing that could be mistaken as an object to cause harm is the answer. I know for a fact it won't make me feel any safer when I fly. If someone seriously wants to take over an airplane, or destroy and airplane, they can do it, regardless of what you ban.
Tell me how you would make a bomb out of cornflakes,im thinking of the millions the mines here could save if they could substitute anfo for a breakfast cereal.

You can actually make an explosive out of pretty much any fine powder -in the case of the kornflakes, they would have to be crushed, but it works. Babypowder works much better, but same idea. It doesn't explode per say, but rather expands very rapidly and displaces a lot of air instantly. In a closed room in can blow all the windows out. In a jetliner I'm pretty sure it wouldn't blow the windows out, but it could knock out some eardrums. It would be an interesting concussion weapon.
Any fine powder can be explosive, try sprinkling coffee mate over a match. But not explosive enough to be carried on your person and still blow a plane apart, plus you need a detonator and that cant be just made out of anything. Sure you could make one out of a phone or something but unless it had the force of a det cap then I cant see it setting anything off. Plus fine powder usually has to be airborne to be explosive, like grain silo's or flour mills or underground coal mines.

Doesn't always have to be airborn. But anyway I wasn't trying to open a debate on how to make cornflake-bombs

, I was making a point that many, many common objects can be used as weapons given the correct application of knowledge.
I still feel a lot safer on a jetliner than going to work in the morning. I'm more likely to be killed on the highway than by terrorists. They can ban everything they want from jetliners -if people still want to bring them down, they can. Have no illusions about that (though I know the idea is to make it as hard as possible to do so, it will never be impossible).
So someones upset that they cant brush their teeth while flying in the air plane? Give me a break most if not every item that is bared from carry on right now is NOT needed while in flight. Put it in your check in bagges and STFU!

Acutually when flying out of the US you are NOT allowed to carry matches or lighters past the security checkpoint. I live in Chicago and have flown out of both O'Hare and Midway many times, and always see a pile of Bic style lighters, Zippos and packs of matches at the security checkpoint. Any passenger flying out of or to the US is not allowed to carry any matches or lighters.

While I agree with you on this. The problem is that nobody checks bags anymore. I see people all the time with the suitcases with wheels that are too big to be classified as carry-ons, carrying them on the plane. Honestly if I'm flying out to see some freiends for the weekend I have a small sports bag with a couple changes of clothes and my toiletries. What am I supposed to do when I'm carrying only one bag?

In Canada you're allowed one Bic lighter per person. Why someone would have more than that is beyond me anyway. It's a new world and I guess this is what is become since 911. If this is the new way, it'll change the way I pack. It will slow me down getting in and out of the airport if I only have something the size of a carry on. Waiting for the airport apes to beat my luggage always takes sooooo long.

So, we should just do nothing in view of new threats? Is that what you advocate?
You need to realise this is a war. Islamic facists want to destroy our civilisation and our freedom.
Not taking gel on a flight seems a small price to pay in this struggle.
Or do you think we should just give up?
Stick our wives in bhurkas, pull our female kin out of school, stone our gay friends to death, flog those who drink alcohol, make our kids learn to recite the Koran instead of getting an education......etc etc?
Sounds like a plan.
Regina @ Fri Aug 11, 2006 7:05 am
Sheesh......that didn't sound like a bad idea until you came to the part about flogging and alcohol. That's just over the top!!!!!!!!

I've not flown sense post 9/11, i've had no need to. I thought about this last night and just shrug my shoulders and thought hmmm ok I would check in my small carry on and have done with it. I'll have to wait in line to get it once I arrive but hey were talking what about 20 extra min. Then this morn. on the radio someone pointed out that its mostly Toiletries type items that are banned cant you just buy some once you arrive? An extra $5 total for me so I personaly would not have an issue on doing that.
Instead of banning all these items, long waits at the airport, strip searching 80 year old women etc, why not just ban Muslims from flying?
Problem solved.

Wrong matches are ok, and if you have a good hiding place small bic lighters are ok too.
