they are keeping their mother tongue and alot of other shit they bring with them because they dont have to do anything else... Canada is being fragmented and we are allowing it... I have been in stores in Vancouver where they only spoke Chinese... what the f'''' is that... you should have to learn one of the official languages...

I think you should be educated in English or French before you reach the country. Look at Germany, they speak English better than many English people. If you go to the Punjab, I bet you will need to speak Punjabi.

Actually, many Indians speak English as a common language to bridge the several hundred dialects of other languages spoken in India. Most Anglophones can travel about India without hindrance due to this handy little facet of Indian culture.

The ones who I speak to at telephone call centers are sometimes lacking in English skills, and in U.K. I have met a number of Indians who can't speak a word of English.

You think Vancouver is bad, go see Toronto lol. That's where the most immigration is, Every month I just see more and more of them and more commonly.

Not that bad now because I can get everything I need without a problem. Whenever I see a store that doesn't speak english, I just avoid them and go to a different store. Seriously got to put a strict rule on this, or it will get ridiculous.

The Mall stores seem perfectly fine, it's just individual stores that don't speak english (Not all of course). However, it's not all bad. There's this chinese chicken place I saw once. They make the best damn chicken I ever tasted, I don't care if I can't understand them. I just love there chicken. It's called Dick and Janes if you ever been? It's not a resteraunt, it's like a mini-McDonalds but they just serve chicken and fries, and chicken and other side dishes.

They just recently got up a drive service, so I call them and can't understand anything they say but I am such a frequent customer they reconize my voice and know exactly what I want to order lol.

I think we should start taking a stand in more of our politics, we see something we don't like and we just bitch about it like we are doing now. None of us actually pickup picket signs, or write e-mails, or call a complaint.

We are just too layed back 8).

Many areas have their own 'flavours' of English. We have people working within the English department(English Literature, not Foreign Languages)at the university who have grad degrees and up and can't speak English worth shit. They don't use articles and their grasp of verb tenses is minimal at best.

(can you see things like this piss me off??? I hated it in Holland, and I hate it here Confused You live in a country, SPEAK THE GODDAMNED LANGUAGE!!!)

I never learnt Ojibwa or Cree or Inuktitut. We never learnt the language coming here, we brought our own and oppressed every other person to learn our language. That is the only reason why English became a dominant language here. It is hypocritical for people to really even say you should learn our language because we never bothered to learn anyone else's. I hope the people coming here do keep their language since I have kept mine so why shouldn't they?

We came, conquered and colonized, establishing a new nation. One does not adopt the languages of the conquered. Those that come to Canada today, come only at the sufferance of the government. It is up to them to conform to our expectations or we refuse them entry. The natives being a fractured and technologically inferior people didn't have the luxury to dictate the conditions of our arrival, as we do to others.

But were you planning on staying?? These people are immigrants and plan to live here, use the services and benfits of being a Canadian but don't have the decency to learn the language. The one woman in the article had lived here for 30 years and still doesn't speak the laguage except basic phrases. You move to a country, you adopt its language and lifestyle.

Well, excuuuuuse me, but the official languages of Canada are French or English. You ought to speak at least ONE of them to get your visa in the skilled worker class, and you have to prove it.

When the "conquerors" came to this piece of rock, wth were they supposed to apply for a visa?

It is kind of embarrasing to see that a lady (around her 40's) has to bring her son in to the doctors office, to explain to the doctor she wants a PAP smear done, and the son has to be there the entire time, because the mom doesn't understand what the doctor says, don't you think?

It was only done so to appeal to another minority who has never given up their language, the French. Despite being a conquered by the British they still have held onto their language even after numerous efforts to eradicate it. What is the difference of having taxpayers having to foot the bill so someone here in a court can have a French translator over someone who speaks German, Ukrainian, or even Cantonese? Why are the later groups that are far more prevalent and numerous here do not have the same rights as even lesser linguistic groups? Canada is not a mono or bilingual country any more and really never has been. I do not think however the solution would be to recognise every language but not to recognise any at all and let society sort itself out. Also changing it so everyone would pay for the services they use would eliminate the argument of those in greater numbers pay more so those of the few can have the same services.

It is her loss and I really do not care if people learn my mother tongue or not. You could speak Dutch the rest of your life here or start your own Dutch colony and it would not matter to me. If you have trouble communicating with other people though it would be your problem not mine. I just do not think it is fair to single out certain races, classes, sexes, and languages over others and it is hypocritical for myself to ask other people to assimilate to my culture when my forefathers never bothered doing the same.

Too bad it doesn't work that way. According to the school regulations, my kids have the right to ESL classes. Too bad, that in this part of BC, there is no money to pay more than 1 ESL teacher, for a whole schooldistrict. The most money will go to the lower mainland, where they have to have a teacher for every language that is spoken in this world. They (my kids) are doing it on their own, while they only have been in this country and in school for 4 months. Why should I be happy that a child born in Canada DOES have the right and the priveldge of an ESL teacher? Why cant that child just speak English, like he is supposed to? Or are you willing to pay more taxes so my kids can get the classes too?

Move to a country, SPEAK THE FUCKIN LANGUAGE. It ain't that hard.

Brenda @ Thu Mar 06, 2008 8:26 pm

They can keep their own language at home, I will try the same, but here, English is spoken outside, so we will speak English. Period. Respect...
