Olivia Newton-John, Singer-Songwriter and Grease Star, Dies at 73

Olivia Newton-John—the Golden Globe-nominated star of Grease, singer, and devoted campaigner for environmental and animal rights—has died at the age of 73. The news was confirmed in a statement on August 8 by her husband, John Easterling, who said that Newton-John had “passed away peacefully at her ranch in Southern California this morning.” While the cause of death was not stated, Easterling noted that Newton-John “has been a symbol of triumphs and hope for over 30 years sharing her journey with breast cancer.” She is survived by her daughter, Chloe Lattanzi.

The Anglo-Australian four-time Grammy Award-winning performer played sugary Sandy Olsson, the 1950s good girl in Grease. “You’re the One that I Want,” her duet with co-star John Travolta in the 1978 film adaptation, remains one of the best-selling singles of all time.

Bill Graham, a former defence and foreign affairs minister, has died

Former cabinet minister Bill Graham has died.

Graham served as minister of foreign affairs under prime minister Jean Chrétien, later being appointed minister of national defence under prime minister Paul Martin.

He also served as leader of the opposition and interim leader of the Liberal Party.

In a tweet, Transport Minister Omar Alghabra called Graham "my friend and mentor."

"He was a giant in Canadian and international politics," Alghabra said.

"He wore his love for Canada on his sleeve. My condolences to his family."

Anne Heche declared legally dead at age 53, family confirms

Actor Anne Heche has died following a car crash in Los Angeles one week ago. She was 53.

Her death was confirmed by a representative for her family in a statement to People Friday afternoon.

"Today we lost a bright light, a kind and most joyful soul, a loving mother, and a loyal friend," the statement on behalf of Heche's family and friends said.

Frank Drake, astronomer famed for contributions to SETI, has died

On Friday, the family of astronomer Frank Drake announced that he passed away peacefully at 92 in his California home, near the site of his final academic position at the University of California, Santa Cruz. Drake made a number of contributions to radio astronomy, including serving as director of the Arecibo radio telescope facility. But Drake is probably best known for an equation that bears his name and his subsequent involvement in SETI efforts. His equation was the first significant attempt to estimate the probability of intelligent extraterrestrial life.
