$1:
The federal government is anticipating at least four years of budget deficits even before Ottawa spends a dime on stimulating the economy.
According to papers released by the Finance Department, Ottawa foresees annual deficits of $5 billion, $5.5 billion, $4 billion and $1 billion in the next four fiscal years.
Even before the billions being spent on the stimulus package? I wonder if that changes a few "yeas" for the stimulus package into a few "nays".
5 billion plus the 3 billion stimulus means a good 8 billion in the red.
$1:
The documents also suggest Ottawa may slip into the red in the current fiscal year instead of posting the $2.3-billion surplus predicted in last February's budget.
Is this govt speak for we are going to be in deficit for sure? Likely.
Whoa!! Now it's four years!

And I am assuming that kenmore, Streaker and Derby are of the belief that the Libs could have done this without a deficit.
Cuz u know it is only one of the worst economic meltdowns since the Depression.

Oh the liberals would have done it made money at the same time and lost 0 jobs.
Oh they also would have taken more money from us and we would have liked it
That $14 billion surplus he inherited in 2006 should would come in handy right now...

It's quite possible they could have. It was Harper, afterall, who insisted on making Surplusses as small as possible.

Ya, keep dreaming....that surplus would have been thrown away to the automakers adn any other person asking for a handout.

looks like the socialist are going to have their way. The gov. is going to spend it's way out of a recession. How did that work for Ont under Bobby??

And how well did Canada do under Bennett when he refused to spend anything? Like it or not, Keynesian economics call for deficit spending in recession, and surpluses in good times.
The big problem with this is that too many people get used to lots of expensive services and insist that what are supposed to be temporary measures continue on endlessly.
