Ottawa to offer Omar Khadr apology, $10-million compensation
IGA IGA:
Canadian soldiers that were mentally or physically harmed, or the families of the soldiers that were killed. I wonder how many got 10 million for serving Canada?
Or the 158 who died there ?
If I may but a different light on the situation. Human Rights Law declares 18 as the minimum legal age for recruitment and use of children in hostilities. Recruiting and using children under the age of 15 is prohibited under international humanitarian law - treaty and customs (Geneva Convention/Laws of Armed Conflict) - and is defined as a war crime by International Criminal Courts.
All that being said Khadr was under 15 when recruited by his loving family into the insurgency that was plaguing Afghanistan. Know what happened and the death of an allied soldier was abhorrent but under international law Khadr at 15 could not be held responsible as an enemy combatant. As a child soldier those that recruited him should have been sentenced for War Crimes and then 15 year old Khadr should have been held under treatment.
As this was not the case and he was treated as an Enemy Combatant he spent 10 years in prison with adults including Gitmo which in itself is in contradiction of Humanitarian Law, Geneva Convention and the Laws of Armed Conflict.
Imaging a child of 15 growing up in a family in which the main focus is White Supremacy somewhere in North America. This kid is then involved in the burning of a Black Church or worse, who would you hold responsible?
Africa is filled with child soldiers who are forced or indoctrinated into killing, rapping and other atrocities. How are we to treat them? For the most part there are camps and treatment centres in Africa to deprogram these kids so I ask who is this any different.
My heartfelt condolences to the Speer family and I am not saying I agree with the current actions taken with regards to Khadr but putting a though out there with focus on the legalities.

You'll pardon me if I don't feel any kind of sympathy whatsoever for the little turd who
knew exactly was he was doing and wanted to be doing it. The minute you become part of terrorism, you are an enemy of the state. 10 years in Gitmo was pale compared to the death by many bullets he should have got. One day, he'll hopefully rot in hell. Karma is a BITCH.

On Netflix, there is a good show called "Beasts of No Nation" on the life of child soldiers. I suggest you watch it before assuming you know everything.
And Khadr is an EMT now, inspired by the people who did patch up his injuries before sending him to Gitmo for torture. Karma is indeed a bitch. Someone who has every right to be angry at the world, instead tried to make it a little better for us all.
Shortly after Omar is sitting pretty counting the Canadian cash PM Useful Idiot bathes Omar and his family organizations in we're going to get to meet the real Khadrs again.
Omar already has the 'favor me I'm a victim' bit down, next comes the speaking engagements at Canada's extremist mosques. Behind closed doors there will be appeals to all the 'little princes' that have been maturing on the Canadian dime, smacking their mothers and sisters around, snapping up Canadian citizenships, all to willing to filter off into sharia chasing orgs endorsed by Jihadi Junior.
Doc will be so surprised, but some of the rest of us won't be.

Not asking for anyone to feel sympathy. Just stating that under law he was a child soldier. If you have kids that have gone down the wrong path with normal parents what chance did a kid brought up in an extremist household have.
This was an issue with one child soldier in Afghanistan. Canada is on the cuff of going operational is Africa. People are going to have to learn pretty quick how to deal with the problem as it is one that will be faced.
I could care less if people think he's rehabilitated or not because that's not the issue. The issue is about justice for his victims and the paying millions of dollars to someone after they have committed treason and murdered our allies.
Oh, and for the record as a Muslim male poor little Omar at age 15 was Baligh which means he was considered an adult who was responsible for his own actions by everyone who's Muslim but, for some odd reason not the people who want to see him rewarded for his illegal actions.
$1:
The minimum age of puberty for boys is 12 and for girls is 9, before this age they are not considered baligh (adults), after this age whenever they show signs of puberty they will be considered baligh, and when both of them reach 15 they will be considered baligh regardless of whether or not any signs are visible. Majma-‘ul-Anhur says:
و عندهما إذا تم خمس عشرة سنة فيهما وهو رواية عن الإمام و به يفتي و ادني مدة له اثنتا عشرة سنة و لها تسع سنين
It also says in Radd-ul-Mukhtar:
بلغت بالسن أي خمس عشرة سنة لم تبلغ تسعا وهذا بيان أقل سن يمکن فيه بلوغ الأنثيٰ
And it says in التحرير المختار علي ردالمحتار باب العدة :
و أقله تسع علي المختار
There is a difference of opinion regarding boys and girls at the age of 6, 7, or 8 but the strongest fatwa is that girls are not baligh before the age of 9, even if they experience female bleeding before this age, this bleeding will not be considered menstrual bleeding (haiz). Similarly a boy will not be baligh before the age of 12.
Allah تعالى is most knowing.

http://www.seekerspath.co.uk/question-b ... -in-islam/So unless he had revoked his religion he has no claim to be considered a child soldier because he wasn't conscripted and he was an adult when he made the decision to go to Afghanistan to fight with his father against the Americans. Besides if he was forced to become a child soldier why weren't any of his other brothers forced into the same situation by their father?
I have no problem with Omar being released and making amends for his illegal actions by becoming an EMT and helping people but, what I have a problem with is his being rewarded monetarily with my money for those same actions which put him in GITMO in the first place.
This is all part and parcel of the myth of childhood innocence which only came into vogue in the mid 20th century.

So because he is Muslim he matures earlier then no religious or children from other religions? I am not concerned with what Islam may state regarding age I am quoting international law. Law is either for all or for none. We can not pick and chose who is or who is not subject to law as we see fit. I am not looking at it through some liberal adgenda just as a point of law and fact.
An indoctrinated or forced individual under the age of 15 is, under the LAW, is a child soldier (regardless of race or religion). As that is a fact he cannot be held responsible, under the law, and was therefore inappropriately dealt with. As any such individual who has been wrongfully treated is eligible to sue for compensation. Again under the Law.
I am just pointing out a different perspective based on recognized international standards. If you remove moral outrage from this case Khadr was treated incorrectly. I am in no means agreeing that he deserves 10 million in compensation.
Rachel Curran just claimed the Khadr family were originally from Pakistan. So much for facts.

it is unfortunate that in American usage 'could care less' and 'couldn't care less' have come to mean the same thing.
Some facts from Veterans for the CPC:
1. He was not a child soldier. The international standard that Canada and dozens of nations adhered to at the time clearly defined a child soldier as a person Under the age of 15. Khadr was 15 plus when captured. The age standard was amended in 2002 to under 18 but was not backdated.
2. His confession to killing Sgt Speer and severely wounding another US was not obtained under duress or torture, it came in a deposition taken by his defense lawyer. He stated that he refused to surrender when the offer came and instead after the other women and children left, fired his AK-47 until it was hit by a bullet and damaged. He reported that he was wounded and didn't hear any of the other brothers firing, so he believed he was the only one left alive but because of his wounds he would soon die. He had two grenades left and threw one which didn't work. He threw the second one and it exploded. He said he then passed out and when he awoke he was at a US military facility/hanger and was zap strapped to a stretcher.
3. After watching a fellow SF medic get killed and another get wounded the USSF soldiers still provided him with lifesaving medical aid according to the Geneva convention.
4. As noted above the US Military provided time for non-combatants to surrender, Khadr chose to fight.
5. The RCMP questioning began with a Happy Meal. It was hardly oppressive.
6. Khadr was never exposed to enhanced interrogation.
7. Khadr had a lawyer throughout his legal process and pled guilty by his own choice.
Canada owes this traitorous family nothing. While veterans are in court attempting to get issues resolved, while they are homeless and struggling with PTSD, while they wait months for their pensions, this terrorist cleans up and becomes a millionaire. Chretien was the PM when this began and Trudeau is now completing the payoff.
He was brought to Afghanistan by his family; he did not travel there of his own volition. I'd say declining the chance to fight with the Taliban was not really an option for hiim. The legality of nearly everything that happened after that is so dubious I don't need to go into it. And why only sue him for millions? Let's go after everyone in Afghanistan for fighting in the war.
