DerbyX DerbyX:
Sometimes the political motivations are unclear or sometimes the situation simply requires greater help then somebody has access to.

I sympathise but little more.

DerbyX DerbyX:
Its no different then people needed far greater medical resources then "their taxes paid for" because they are afflicted with cancer or other terminal illness. I don't begrudge them access to loads more medical dollars then I have because they need it.

There is a huge difference in that the governments of Canada have stated they will be the sole suppliers of the service and therefore have a responsibility to provide that service in its entirety.

DerbyX DerbyX:
I feel the same thing should happen abroad. I feel that out gov't should be there for us. Its all about pulling togeather as a country when a Canadian needs help. I'd go the extra mile to help out a fellow canuck abroad if they need the help (within reason of course).

I think the Canadian people should pull resources together to assist others. I just disagree we should sit back in our recliners and expect the government to do the heavy lifting.

DerbyX DerbyX:
I think we have both pretty much stated our case. I'm teaching Bart all about sex on another thread though and its becoming a full time job.

Good luck with that.

interesting how the guy that is guilty in this case is in an American jail...
she accepts severance and wham she is locked up...personally I dont think the tory govt gives a shit about the average canadian.. they are doing jack squat to help this person.. and so I give credit to Paul Martin for intervening in any way.. he has brought international attention to this case... which has to embarass the Haprer Govt... Canadian Embassys and consulates are there to help we Canadians when travelling abroad... should we expect help... fucking right..

Thank you Kenmore for bringing this back to topic. I as I said what is being currently discuss here is a differing debate on a differing point.

To try to put this back in focus....What this is about is who can you count on if you are unjustly jailed in an other country and you have nowhere to turn. Your first thought is My embassy to get word back home.

Will Dion demand an inquiry to investigate the relationship between a convicted con man, and Paul Martin?

So what exactly did Pauly do..give her a hug? this is not a new story. Just like the Cadman allegations Pauly waits till he sees it as being an advantage for the Libs before he goes and sticks his nose in there for the free photo op.

Embassies are there for more than for governments to talk to each other and hold parties. They are a safe place for Canadians to go to if there is a dispute or misunderstanding. It is home soil in a strange land. The Canadian ambassador in Mexico needs to be recalled and put out on the carpet over this one. He and his staff have failed this Canadian woman and in doing so they have failed us all. There by the grace of God go any of us.

Well said

I don't know, I think Martin is actually doing a good thing here. He's not running around grandstanding about what he's doing or criticizing the government for their inaction or anything. Martin had a pretty good relationship with Mexico when he was in office so I can't see this hurting anything. While I've never been a fan of Martin I have to admit that he has been doing some good work as of late with various aid organizations and the fact that he is donating his MP's salary to charity deserves at the very least a pat on the back.

For those who are criticizing Harper for inaction though you should keep in mind that any push by the official government of Canada on this issue may make matters worse. The Mexican judiciary is fiercely independent and any action that can be perceived as political interference in their system may likely only result in them digging in their heels further.

cool your jets mtbr.. he was there on official business.. read the article...
the fact that he took the time says plenty .. he wasnt acting for the liberals he is not in government... your uselesss fucking tories who are sitting in ottawa and scamming the public are licking their nuts and allowing this women to rot in mexico... fuck i cant wait till they get their ass kicked out of ottawa... we were so close to anihalating the bastards during the kim campbell fiasco...only 2 seats kept the heart beating ... oh so fucking close... bunch of pricks

mtbr @ Thu Mar 13, 2008 7:53 pm

yeah you guys are right ...Harper should just pick up the phone and say" what the fuck shes not American let her out"...that should get her out.

Maybe we could send the JTF2 to bust her out :D

I don't understand this and perhaps somebody could enlighten me but why is this person in a Mexican prison? I know NAFTA is about free trade but isn't there some sort of rules about prisoners of other countries of such? Why is there no extradition process and indeed the Harper government should be doing more as nobody should be in a Mexican prison.

If there was then half the prison guards in the US would be unemployed.

First of all, I don't know why people are putting Libs vs Cons on this matter or why it is even politically domestic. Martin wasn't a very good PM be he a Lib or a Con and he is a good guy.

Really, how could it be any worse? If it is, who cares??? It's Mexico. They're the Americans problem. Apparently our problem is our people getting killed or jailed in Mexico and nobody does anything about it.

Jeez, political interference. Only god knows what the Americans would do if one of their people are jailed without due process, lawyers or anything. Then again, maybe their are Americans in such a dilemma.....who knows what rots in Mexican prisons. This shit shouldn't even be happening anyways for a trade partner on the same continent.

A tongue in cheek response that if the three countries had to return prisoners to their country of birth or origin the US prison population would be greatly reduced through expatriated Mexicans.
