hahah

Maybe the Mexicans can do what Canada couldn't throw Marin in prison with them! And you can take Chretien also.

That's what I was thinking. Right place, wrong side of the fence.

(Please try to bribe them.. Please try to bribe them.. Please try to bribe them.. Please try to bribe them.. Please try to bribe them..)

Paul Martin still hasn't visited the graves of all Canadian soldiers that died while Paul was gouging $20 billion from the defense budget.

oh please... I just cant comment on these two posts from ... well you know who... seems the tories are too busy buying a majority to help a Canadian whose rights are being violated. if she could ensure a majority for them they would have gone to her aid day one...

kenmore @ Thu Mar 13, 2008 7:55 am

word of advice ...dont travel while the tories are in power...

Actually I am somewhat disappointed in the performance of Canada's diplomatic corp...who dropped the ball with this matter.

Diplomatically the government cannot interveen legally. However Martin is not the government, and has no such restraint. While Martin has no official influence, he is a prominent enough personality to grab headlines and has chosen to do so.

I commend him for that.

I just returned from Mexico... if I had gotten in trouble I would think that I could contact the consulate there and get help.. this person's rights have been violated big time.. I am dissapointed in the Governments lack of concern.. everytime Gergis is interviewed she says well she is in a foreign country and Canada has no jurisdiction.. she is the jurisdicition for Canadians abroad... I think she should resign.. Martin does have influence in the international community.. he was Prime Minister and a cabinet minister for many years.. what he is doing basically is embarrasing the Harper Government for their lack of compassion.... which by the way is a normal tory attitude...

Loved Martin as Finance Minister, thought he was a twit as PM and earned the Mr Dithers moniker. With this move he has regained my respect even though he was in Mexico on business anyway. There is a big difference between the government not helping an admitted and convicted murder off death row in the US and doing something for this poor lady who at a minimum should be returned to Canada for trial. To me, Martin not giving interviews about his intervention for fear of appearing as though he was grandstanding speaks volumes about someone truly interested in helping and not trying to embarrass the government of the day.

Boy... who was that who gutted the foreign service, the RCMP and many other civil service posts so he could claim he balanced the budget.. I'll give you a hint: It was the PM before Harper.

I'd like to see some action there too but I'd rather see a Canadian boycott of Mexico.

Finally someone is doing something positive on this womans behalf. Two years and this government, her government has done little to nothing!

True to form (or forum) for the CONartist Party supporters to spin & deflect that fact by chastising Martin over doing what the Harper should have done a year ago.

GOOD ON YA PAUL! Go get 'em!

Tell me again about how you are trying to "convince" people you aren't a partisan hack and that it really isn't a jihad against the Liberal party.

A whole bunch of crybaby threads against the Liberals, more crying that poor Harper was viciously maligned (even though he admitted it on tape), and now wishing Martin would be jailed in Mexico for the crime of tryting to help a wrongfully imprisoned Canadian abroad, someone whom are current regime aren't helping.

What a sad little partisan hack you are.

Canadians who travel, be they real or paper ones, shouldn't expect any assistance from the government outside of a consulate member being able to inform your family of your predicament and other basic rights as guaranteed by whichever international agreement your captors are signature to.

We as a people seem to have some sort of national arrogance believing that the thrid world simpletons who incarcerate us should magically spring the door when they find they are dealing with a member of the global privileged class. Further, there always seems to be a presumption by the Canadian public that the so called victim is innocent.

That many Canadians are wrongly imprisoned and/or tortured is a fact, but it is the responsibility of the individual to do his/her diligence prior to traveling.

DerbyX @ Thu Mar 13, 2008 1:02 pm

You think our gov't has no responsibility to help us out abroad if we are falsely imprisoned or other such thing?

Tell you what. We will make it voluntary. If you feel that way then you don't need to ask for help if it happens to you.

She was working as a cook & housekeeper for a man who was a thief and a con man. She had no idea he was involved in wrong doing.

Ok so what should she have done so as to not be in the situation she is now in?
