I like in the comments section on that news article:

"LotusBrandy wrote:

i apologize because i thought canada was a less racist society than the U.S., but apparently not. my bad."

so very true...

another good one.

I'm very tired with these and special interest (self-interest) groups that demand apologies and compensation. It's like their motto is: "What's in it for me?"

One, was it Harper or his government's freaking fault? If the answer is no, and I think it is, why the hell is he apologizing? I'm fine with him saying it was a "bad thing" or denouncing the event, but I am tired of politicians pandering and wasting our time over things they weren't even around to deal with.

Second:

$1:
"The apology was unacceptable," said Jaswinder Singh Toor, president of The Descendants of Komagatamaru Society.

I think this demonstrates the uselessness of such apologies. You will not satisfy these groups. Just shut up and get back to the business of government.

People forget countries can pick and choose who to let in, why should we be made to apologize to people, when we don't allow THEM into OUR country almost 100 years ago? People need to give their head a shake. Special interest groups are killing this country. perhaps we need to start telling these groups that want compensation for whatever perceived injustice that was committed to their great grandparents by governments long gone "too bad" and stop bowing to the will of these people.

Harper's moves have been limited, appropriate and politically savvy. Besides, anyone that has even a passing knowledge of Canadian politics knows about Quebec's status (it's been that way for hundreds of years)

Harpers remarks SHOULD have gone something like this; " Yes, it was a terrible situation, the resulting deaths, but THEY WERE COMMITED BY THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT of the time. We let YOU in, now be grateful for that and GET ON WITH YOUR LIFE!"

Our petty assed government is turning into an apologetic bunch of candy asses who are embarrassing the entire country.

You can bet your rear end that the Sihks will be looking for financial compensation now. Maybe they are generational affected by what happened to their ancestors like another race we are all too familiar with so the grand children qualify for more government money.

Nope, they were British subjects at the time. They technically had the same rights under the crown as the British anglo-saxons did. Legally it was a sticky situation.

Nothing wrong with saying what needs to be said.

If the Liberals would have done this more often, we'd be a better country.

This is so stinking lame it defies explanation. Apologizing for something in which no one alive had anything to do with it is just a simple matter of bashing one's own country. My respect for Harper goes down two points on this news.

Harper doesn't care really. Harper has an election to win. The Sikhs, and Hindus, believe it or not lean right. The only problem has been that the right has rejected immigrants (or at least perceived to have rejected, which not actually true at all, they've been better to immigrants than the libs). Harper is now courting immigrants, and he's doing ok. My father who is an immigrant and a visible minority in Canada has voted Labour in the UK twice, and Liberal in Canada. However he will now be voting Conservative indefinitely. He's not the only one. Harper's tactics are turning opinions about the Conservative/right win party.
