he has turned his back on cities because his Tory party won hardly any seats in large urban ridings
....and there you have it.

and this editorial was printed in the toronto star , which is known for this kind of things , why i'm i not surprised by this .
but i don't think the cities are being ignored , maybe there not geting as much special treatment as they'd like but government policy on things like crime and taxes would help out city residents as much as non-city ones.
Oh.. Boo hoo hoo. Poor Toronto isn't the center of the world anymore.
Canada is larger and far more valuable than just the political power bases.
It's not just about Toronto, dude.
He snubbed all Canadian cities; Vancouver, Edmonton, Calgary, Regina, Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Toronto, Windsor, Ottawa, Montreal, Quebec, Halifax and St. John's.
He gave nothing to any of our cities, which help represent Canada globally. This is especially true in regard to cities such as Vancouver, Montreal and Toronto.
Do the cities belong to the provinces or to the feds?
Should the feds directly grease the squeeky cities and not deal through the provinces?
I suspect you'll say yes because the past process of pandering to the power bases is what ensures Toronto continues to vote Liberal.

Both. neither one is nor should be solely responsible for the cities.

No, but you missed the point; Harper needs to show that he cares about all Canadian cities. He directly failed to do so. I find that reckless in a leader. Maybe you don't, but I would expect more from a man who we elected to a powerful position. The least he could do is listen to Canadians and help out the cities where those Canadians live.

Oh, please. Will you stop with the petty hatred of Toronto for one minute?
How should he show this compassion? Paying for their olympic construction or their rapid transit system? Vancouver is struggling with both but we're not getting any sweetheart deals from Ottawa. Is that because we're not worthy or simply because we don't vote Liberal enough?
Toronto is a major powerbase for the Liberals, and this "problem" is being reported about a Conservative leader by a Toronto newspaper. How do you expect me to dismiss something so transparant and obvious?

It is not up to the federal government to pay for your snow removal or transit system. Why should Edmontonians have to pay for projects and services in Toronto or Vancouver? Municipalities can pay for their own affairs and it does not fall into federal jurisdiction.

Cities, towns, municipalities, etc. are provincial constructs, therefore they are a provincial responsibility. What is it with "certain cities" going around (yes I mean YOU Toronto) asking for handouts? How about some proper budgeting m'kay? I know for a fact that Toronto has not been spending its cash wisely and the mess is at least partly its own doing.
didn't TO get some huge amount of money for their subway system not long ago?

The federal government has committeed a lot of money to Olympics projects in Vacnouver and Whistler.

In the Multi-Party Agreement, the Government of Canada and the Government of British Columbia have both agreed to provide $310 million in funding to cover infrastructure and legacy costs. Further to this contribution, the Government of Canada will provide an additional $242 million, which includes a $55 million additional one-time investment in venues, bringing the Government of Canada’s total investment in the Games to $552 million.
Not a sweetheart deal, bucko.
Still can't compare to the graft Montreal and Toronto have recieved.

Well, maybe you should vote NDP then. I'm sure they'd shell out more taxpayers' money to the cities.

Those "political power bases", as you refer to them, are Canada's most important economic motors. If the provinces are unable or unwilling to provide support, the feds should.
But, of course, Canada's "new" government hates everything urban, and that lack of vision will hurt the country in the long run.
