Canadian
So watch the reality:
$1:
Among the crowd were B.C. NDP leader Adrian Dix, New Democrat MP Fin Donnelly, Liberal MP Joyce Murray, and local politicians such as Vancouver city councillor Kerry Jang
So, dipper, dipper, lib, and Jang tried to be a dipper.
Richmond:
2 federal ridings both won by CPC.
They get the money.
Have a think about that the next time your in the booth.

So I take your against a Coast Guard base at Kitsilano.

You take nothing, I have no opinion, other than I know
Richmond is farther out than Kits.
I simply cite what can happen when your area votes against
the ruling party.... or for it.

So note the prevailing political winds, and vote accordingly. If the Dipppers look like they have the best chance, vote for them. 100% majorities, all the time.

Cost reductions are always made to things that people think have value otherwise they would have been removed long ago for being wastes of money.
If they think it's such a huge deal, set up a charity and raise the funds to operate the base.

It appears there is no subject that you are clueless about that you won't chime in on.

That's right, no one talks shit about Gunny's Navy!

This is an area I whole heartedly disagree with the government for cutting. This isn't like cutting back a few branches of the public library.

So you think that the base was useless, I guess a few cases would slip by now and then.

I agree. The really sad, pathetic, horrible thing is... after a few accidents occur where lives are lost that are linked to "slow response" due to the loss of this coast guard station... it will re re-instated. Watch for it.
$1:
The Vancouver base is the busiest coast guard base in Canada and responds to more than 350 calls a year. It has responded to 226 calls so far this year, said Dave Clark, a spokesman for the Union of Canadian Transportation Employees, which represents Coast Guard members
And yet the "powers that be" shut it down...

unreal.
$1:
But critics argue the base at Sea Island is too far away, and that it would take at least 30 minutes for rescuers to reach those in distress around the Vancouver harbour. The Kitsilano Coast Guard would take only five to 10 minutes, they said.
That 20 min difference could be what separates rescue from sorrow...

Are you serious? A charity to run the Coast Guard?
The Duke must have been a prophet. Obviously he had Xort Bus in mind when he said 'Life is hard...It's even harder when you're stupid.'

If the local population thinks it's a valueable investment to help fund it's operation why not?
Many medical services operate charitable organizations to help raise funds for operational costs and equipment acquisition.
