Red vs white: battle of poppies erupts in Canada
There is another symbol.
It's a white feather.

Well, I know that when I lived in Japan and wore mine, the Brits all asked what I was wearing, as they had always had white poppies.
Personally, I see nothing wrong with wishing for world peace AND remembering the sacrifice of our veterans. Odds are, world peace will never happen, but if people don't at least try, then all we are doomed to is more of our citizens dying in foreign lands.
I for one think it's a good idea. It might sound naive, but a world without conflict is something everyone should wish for. However, human nature/greed gets in the way and prevents it from occurring.
The most poignant thing a soldier ever told me was this, "It is soldiers who wish the most for peace, for they are the ones who suffer the greatest when a war starts."

When were you in Japan? We all wear red poppies here in the UK and always have done as far as I know. The only gripe I might have is that the British ones are just made of paper and not as durable as the ones in Canada.

I was there from 1999-2001. I gave one to a London gal who thought it was odd looking and oddly coloured. Go figure...maybe she was just a ditz!

It might just be because ours are made of a flimsy paper sort of material as opposed to the Canadian plastic ones.
But Canadian ones are specifically designed to fall off. I remember one year I lost 5 poppies...
If you want to wear, distribute or sell a white poppy, there is World Peace Day, for that.
Nov. and specifically, Nov. 11th, is for remembering the fallen. period.
It is also a trademark infringement. I say let the Vets sue them and reep a whirl wind of a settlement.
You are correct Bear, this is another example of someone using this day of Rememberance to his advantage. There is nothing honorable about this persons intent. I hope the vets sue his sorry ass off for trademark infringement also.
I'd gladly buy a white petunia on World Peace Day, a handful infact.
There are rumours of white poppies here in the UK but neither I nor anyone I know has ever seen them on sale or people wearing them in the UK.
The poppy is just something you don't mess with. People today use it to remember ALL war dead, be they civilians or servicemen. There is really no need to devalue such a potent symbol of peace as the red poppy by producing a white competitor.
The red poppy is for peace and world peace. It is merely asking that you do not forget the unfortunate ones who have been affected by the horrors of war.

According to the ass here in Canada. It originated with some womans group in the UK,
I think the guy is just an ass, looking to spread his political point at our Vets expense. I really loved the part in his interview, where he accused the Vetran Head of the Legion of just complaining because of not wanting to share the market. Like the poppy is all about money.
The guys is an unmittigated ass, period.

The white poppy was first introduced by the Women's Co-operative Guild in 1933 and was intended as a lasting symbol for peace and an end to all wars.

I am shocked at the fact that this is not endoursed. After all,is it not peace they died for.
I agree. I'm also shocked by this. Most notably by "Fucking peace activists." We are usually very proud to call ourselves a peacekeeping nation. Pearson has a Nobel Peace prize, and our peacekeepers also have the same prize. Peace is what we fight for. I would very gladly and proudly wear a red poppy and a white poppy. I have nothing against peace, I kinda like it.
Another two cents: I perceive it more as the Legion is worried it will lose a nickel rather than someone else is stealing the image and is trying to make a nickel.

Also - since when did the normal poppy represent something other than remembering those who died for peace and freedom? I have no desire to honour war, so I find it hard to believe that the legion and this other group have different impressions of what the poppy represents.
I think poppied for peace is a great idea. Every good soldier is a peace activist.

I'd second this. Sept 21 is international peace day and people involved can wear, or not, whatever they want. Any poppies other than the red, dilute or sidetrack the purpose of Nov. 11.
The veterans paid in blood for this day & they deserve it.

I understand where they are coming from. But why change it? What is the reasoning? Isn't this what the red poppy is for? And a poppy isn't even white.
