I agree Mustang, a homophobic slur hardly compares to joking about murdering two people.

It was a dumb joke. I don't know why people are so worked up over it. I wouldn't care if it was about Jake Layton, Dion or Jean Charest - it's not that big of a deal and hardly worth the effort of getting upset over.

As a said earlier, some need to be introduced to politics

Again agreed. I'm sure there would be no adverse comments from some of the 'shocked' partisan Tories here if it was Dion and Kyoto being killed.

It's a stupid comment but it's just that.

The Liberal joke was printed in a newsletter for public distribution. It was a party newsletter fer christ sakes.

It's a weak recycled joke that is literally preposterous and not serious in its intent. Will you be censoring all political jokes now too? Some suggest violence to political leaders, albeit in a humorous fashion that most adults understand. Be careful...i'll hold you to this one.

$1:
The CPC joke was someone being stupid to a closed and drunk audience. It was obviously never intended for public release.

Again, intent of the joke - it was malicious or can't you tell the difference?

$1:
Why do you refuse to accept that it's the publication that is stupid and not the joke itself.

Why do you refuse to accept that it's an old recycled (i'll bet you didn't even know that) joke that maybe is in poor taste (although the taboo element is often the core of humour)but nonetheless, harmless. Again, will you be starting a letter campaign against Canada's major news periodicals for political cartoons? You don't think that they've illustrated similar acts, do you? Come on, let's see you show some consistency.

Yeah...i wonder if these Puritans practice what they preach and harass every Canadian newspaper each day for political cartoons too?

Its probably the only way Dion can win.

Yeah what's so funny about a Conservative leader taken out by friendly fire?
That's HISTORY not humour!
Isn't it Stockwell Day, Preston Manning, Joe Clark etc?

More on this topic:

It's funny, doing some reading on this, I found one of the Libblogs defending this and in doing so, it made an interesting point. He cites examples where this same joke was used for Tony Blair; George Bush; PM John Howard; Kevin Rudd; and a number of others.
What's funny is that for the most parts these are right spectrum politico's being joked about by left spectrum publications.
So far, no one has found a right side publication making a joke of this type. That's good to see.

Liberal Joke Not So Funny
Wed, 2008-07-09 22:35.
Siobhan Morris
Tory Garden City MP Rick Dykstra says one joke came across his desk that left him far from laughter.

In a springtime Liberal publication, is a joke about the assasination of Stephen Harper and his wife Laureen.

Dykstra was so angry, he issued a news release, pointing the finger at St. Catharines federal Liberal candidate Walt Lastewka.

The blame left Lastewka gobsmacked.

Lastewka tells CKTB joke was an item was in the Liberal Riding Association newsletter, penned by the president.

Lastewka the joke has nothing to do with him or his campaign.

Lastewka accused Dykstra of smear politics, trying to dampen the mood, as Liberal Leader Stéphane Dion visited St. Catharines for a barbecue and town hall.

Dion admits the joke was inappropriate and in poor taste.

But he says he is disappointed in the road taken by the Tories.

Dion says Canadians deserve a leadership that is honest and respectful.

The author of the joke, Riding President Jane Cornelius, has issued an apology.
