Lesson learnt: Carbon Fibre is very strong in experiencing tension. It is very weak and cracks under compression. Going in deep water, and object experiences compression the deeper it goes.

   

It's actually amazing that the Titanic's decks haven't all collapsed after all this time. Still mostly intact after 111 years of holding up all that water weight? Guess that internal bulkhead system was far stronger than anyone ever could have imagined, even more so considering the ship was practically all-riveted construction from just a few years before electric welding becoming dominant in ship building.

   

I doubt they hold any air. They likely burst as the Titanic sank, and now are just open metal boxes. Or they've developed rust holes, and leaked.

Like airframes that need to be replaced after so many flights because the constant pressure/depressure weakens the hull. This is what casued this to crack like an egg after 5 years of use.

   

Very similar. Metal fatigue is because of the crystalline structure of metal, but carbon fibre isn't really a solid crystal like metal. But the resin that holds the carbon together is. And it takes far fewer stress cycles to crack. It could have cracked the first time, if there was any trapped air in the weave.

But it was definitely going to end up like this. That's part of the reason the German navy gave up on CF subs. And I wish I could find a study of them that I recall reading, but google sucks cock lately and can't find things I know exist.

   

Yeah. Anytime there’s friction like you’d get in a carbon fiber composite like that hull was made of, you’re going to get fatigue. Like I guessed a few pages back; the first thing I thought of was the DeHavilland Comet. Successful for a good while, but eventually the constant expansion and compression of the airframe caused its downfall.

   

   

   

I suppose Stockton Rush thought he was the protagonist of an Ayn Rand novel, given his complaining about how "regulation stifles innovation" and his refusal to have his oh-so-perfect designs independently tested, to the point of firing engineers who raised concerns about the Titan.

Unfortunately, this John Galt-wannabe forgot that he lives in the real world, where government regulations and independent testing have actually improved the safety and quality of just about every kind of product you can imagine. His big, brave vision got him and four other people killed, all for a stupid vanity project.
