Horseshit. If the RCMP sold the coin back in 1974 then it's none of their fucking business if someone sells it again 45 years later.

Rigalia and symbols of the RCMP are trademarked, and can't be used without permission. They can resell the coin, but can't show it without permission.

http://www.ic.gc.ca/eic/site/cipointern ... l#policing

That's ridiculous. You folks really need to clean up your laws on property rights because this construct means that after the coin was sold the RCMP retained an ownership right...which would mean their claim to have 'sold' the coin was fraudulent because they sold something that cannot legally be sold or transferred.

It's no different in the US. Try opening a fruit stand with the name 'Apple' in it, and Apple Records and Apple Computer will both come down on you like an anvil on Wile E. Coyote.

They are free to sell the coin, they just can't show images of it that fall under trademark. Same as if you try putting an image of a poppy in your logo - the Legion will challenge it under their trademark, because if they don't they will lose the trademark.

These people don't GAF about the poppy trademark.

And shit-tons of people don't GAF about the RCMP's absurd claims to own coins after they're sold.

And shit tons of people also realize the RCMP are only being asses about it because the group preaches hate, so deserves no compassion. And the RCMP doesn't clam to own the coins, only the right to display their image.

Can they display the image from an informational perspective and not a sales perspective?

Say a website that has information about coins in general and includes those along with shit like Mint dates, material, initial cost, expected current value, etc. But they don't do so in a way that attempts to sell the coin, it's purely educational. Would that violate trademark?

Probably not. You aren't claiming the trademark, only showing the chattel for sale.

But like I wrote, the RCMP are probably being dicks, because they can be.

Tricks @ Fri Jul 12, 2019 11:34 am

Yeah for sure. Trademark laws are written so that people can be dicks if they want to. See Pepe the frog creator suing infowars.

A neo-Nazi group in northern Italy had sent members to fight alongside Russia-backed separatists in the Donbass region of Ukraine. Apparently, the group brought some things back from their adventures—including a French-made air-to-air missile that somehow found its way from Qatar into the home of a fascist extremist.

The missile and an assortment of other weapons were discovered in the latest of a series of raids by Italian federal police from the General Investigations and Special Operations Division (DIGOS). The raids are part of an ongoing investigation into the Forza Nuova political party and Rebel Firm extremist groups that had fought in the Donbass region.

Other raids had turned up pro-Nazi and pro-fascist propaganda and relics alongside caches of knives and other illegal weapons—including brass knuckles, and a baseball bat inscribed with the words "Dux Mussolini" (Leader Mussolini) and a portrait of Italian Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini. The groups were also being investigated under Italy's anti-fascist laws, following pro-fascist comments by Forza Nuova's leader in Turin, Luigi Cortese. But in a raid today in the province of Pavia, south of Milan, police discovered a collection of modern automatic weapons—including nine assault rifles, a submachine gun, seven pistols, silencers, bayonets, and other military weapons.

Ironically in WW2 the Nazis fought alongside the Ukrainians and against the Russians. How times change.

How a misleading YouTube video is stoking fears about Shariah law before the federal election

A short, grainy YouTube video circulating on social media purports to show evidence of an imam claiming that if Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is re-elected, he will institute Shariah law, the legal code of Islam, based on the Qur'an.

But the video was taken out of context, according to the man featured in it, and it was created by Sandra Solomon, known for her anti-Islam views.

The video has about 50,000 views on YouTube, a middling amount, but it has been posted on at least three different Facebook groups that are critical of Trudeau. Altogether, the groups have more than 185,000 likes, and posts of the video were shared more than 7,000 times.

The three pages get high engagement in terms of reactions, comments and shares, and they are in some of the most popular groups spreading memes and disinformation online. These groups equal or often exceed many traditional media outlets for engagement on Facebook.

The video itself includes a short section from a speech about Islam delivered by Mufti Aasim Rashid in Kamloops, B.C., in October 2017. It also features a picture of Justin Trudeau praying at a mosque and ends on a clip of Trudeau championing diversity, which is then covered up by a photo illustration of a small child wearing a "Make Canada Great Again" hat.
What's in the video

In the full-length recording of Rashid's speech posted to YouTube, he is critical of fears over Shariah, saying it is a principle that underpins Islam, and there is no conspiracy among Muslims to bring Shariah to Canada.

Nowhere in the video does Rashid mention Trudeau or the 2019 federal election. In fact, during the portion of the speech used in the misleading video, Rashid said he was actually referring to the former Stephen Harper Conservative government.
