All this fuss over the Fox news clip made me start thinking... Why is it that the Left is always funnier than the Right? Seriously, The Daily Show vs. Redeye? Stephen Colbert vs. Dennis Miller? It's not even a contest.

Even shows like SNL that aren't neccesarily left or right, are funnier when they're making fun of rightwingers than when they're making fun of left wingers.

Here in Canada, Stockwell Day and Stephen Harper consistently have better jokes told about them and Jack Layton does, and Jack is so obviously ridiculous that you'd think it would be easy.

If I was American I wouldn't be able to decide whether to vote Democrat to reward them for being funnier, or republican so there'd be more for the left to tell jokes about.

The media is left wing in both countries so it should be no surprise.

It's not just the media, the vast majority of stand-up comedians I've seen where left leaning when they talked politics as well. I suppose I should have added that in real life talking to real people, right leaning people do tend to be funnier, or atleast less whiny and better able to laugh at themselves and their politics.

And obviously, CNN only thinks that Edmonton is a shithole cause it's the capital of a conservative province and they're part of the left-wing media conspiracy. I'd hate to see what they think of Calgary, probably wouldn't be allowed to broadcast that opinion.

Probably it's because the Left has a better sense of humor. 8)

Artists tend to be left-leaning generally, I've noted. Or more specifically, they tend to be anti-conservative, or have some kind of innate subversiveness in their nature. Same with academics. Bart linked to a paper once that showed journalists were left-leaning as well (which, it shoiuld be noted, is a lot different than saying that the media are left leaning). Who knows why that is, but it's why the worst governments always target the artists and academics first.

Stewart: Funny. Colbert: Over the top. Miller: was funny pre-9/11, now he's just an angry man who says "fuck" a lot. Mercer: God.

Naw, the worst governments target the poor and the business class first. The poor because they can't defend themselves, and the business community because it's pretty hard for rich people to generate much sympathy for themselves. It only seem like the artists and academics are always under attack because they can make themselves heard.

Ummm... no. My mistake, I was attempting sarcasm. Keep forgetting it doesn't work on the internet.

I'm right-wingish and I find Stewart funny, Colbert not so much. Miller still has his moments but not like he used to be and Rick Mercer can be funny although sometimes I find him annoying!

I reject your premise. The Left is not always funnier than the Right.

Scape @ Thu Mar 26, 2009 6:58 pm

I agree but the left is funny on purpose.

Freakinoldguy @ Thu Mar 26, 2009 6:59 pm

It's age.

Dennis Miller was funny to the left till he got older and more Conservative in his views. The same things'll happen to Colbert, Mercer and Stewart, with time.

Their audience will get older and more conservative in their views and they'll be replaced with a younger hipper set of comedians that the younger, who tend to be more left wing can "relate to".

So who may be funny to me, might seem archaic and uphip to some younger person who's views on the world are still seen through the rose coloured glasses of youth.

Only insecure people care who is funnier.
