In response to the contracting out of the Census, a new website, CountMeOut.ca has been launched. The website is filled with practical suggestions for "minimum cooperation" with the Census. Suggestions range from not submitting census information online over the internet as StatsCan urges, to opting for individual census forms for each member of a household, to placing stickers over the barcodes of census forms.

The May 16, 2006 Canada Census presents all Canadians with an easy, yet extremely effective way to protest the sellout of Canadian sovereignty through Free Trade; and the erosion of personal privacy and civil liberties.

Visit www.CountMeOut.ca for further information.

And spread the word.

"And the particular corporation awarded the May 2006 Canada Census is in fact a subsidiary of the colossal US armaments manufacturer Lockheed Martin."

How quaint.

I wonder: who will they sell the information gathered to after they give a copy of it to the Federal Government?

Dr Caleb @ Sat Mar 11, 2006 3:17 pm

Lockheed Martin does not have to 'sell' the information, under the U.S.A.P.A.T.R.I.O.T. act, they must give it to Department of Homeland Security, on request. Under that same act, they are forbidden from telling anyone they they have given the information to DHS or that they were requested to give DHS the information.

If you think they wouldn't, remember LM's motto "We remember who we work for.". There are plenty of articles on Vive discussing this.

Personally, the US government does not need to know my name, nor how many cats live in my home. Or anything else about me.

So are you going to boycott the census?

matters for Canada.

Feel safer now?

"So are you going to boycott the census?"

Of course. We're told that LM has a limited role in the census, that being printing the results or some such. Until they have no part in it, I will not participate in the Census.

Everything we buy now on credit, or bank cards is automatically transferred to computers in the USA and the whole world. Otherwise, people couldn't use their cards in other countries. The card providers can see anywhere on Earth when we buy anything anywhere else and what our credit limits and ratings are.

Living in the boondocks we, unfortunately, have to use credit cards for mail orders.

We've had bank cards since they came out and used them twice in emergencies. Once for cash, once when I was a few bucks short for groceries. Otherwise we pay all our bills by cash, or cheque, as it also creates employment down the line.

Years ago we received census forms with small circles and a special pencil to make dots in them, so that scanners can read them. I threw away the pencil and used a 4H to make the smallest dots.

I'm in as well!
By the way, if you want to see sparks fly, just read these exchanges about the privacy issue!
There is apparently prison or a fine involved if one refuses to participate (although I gather that this site is not advocating that, only a slowing of the process). But should one refuse to participate downright, what exactly would be the prison term or the fine? I for one do not know. I shall look it up. In the meantime, if anyone has information, it would be greatly appreciated.

It's in Section 31 of the Statistics Act. It is an offence to refuse to provide Census information, or to provide false information. Penalty: $500 and/or 3 months.

The CountMeOut.ca website does not advocate either of these options, but rather leaves the decision to each Canadian.

The website focusses on MINIMUM COOPERATION as a means of bogging down the census without actual refusal, and thus making Statistics Canada think twice in the future about contracting out the census.
This horrific abuse of the public trust should be openly resisted. I am not a lawyer, but I wonder about the legality of this. Seeing that Lockheed Martin must give this information upon request to the US government, and is prohibited by law from telling us if it does, doesn't this break our privacy laws? What would the legal standing of someone be, if he/she were to refuse to give census information on the basis that it violates Canadian privacy law? If I could afford a lawyer, I would seriously consider civil disobedience in this case.

Deacon @ Sun Mar 12, 2006 2:25 am

Neither Lockheed Martin or that terrorist SOB Bush have any need for information concerning my person, my possesions, or my family.

Request denied.

shagya @ Sun Mar 12, 2006 2:32 am

Perhaps he'll include dinosaurs in the census. After all they're only as old as us (Duh).

shagya @ Sun Mar 12, 2006 2:48 am

Has anyone ever fought Statistics Canada on this?

Dave Ruston @ Sun Mar 12, 2006 1:09 pm

I will refuse too! Lougheed-Martin and the US government have no business knowing anything about me! If a law is unjust, it should be broken enough times until it is changed to truly reflect justice.

Vive, along with other website organisations, protested Lockheed Martins involvement with the census. We wrote letters to the head of Stats Can and received this in reply.
You can enter Statistics Canada into the search window above for a complete list of articles on this subject.
---
