CBC:
A fragile calm has settled in but a tense standoff continues in Caledonia, Ont., hours after aboriginal protesters and non-native residents traded punches and insults.

Ontario Provincial Police officers have separated the two sides, lining up in a pair of columns to keep them apart on Highway 6, the main road running through the southern Ontario town...

...Tempers reached the boiling point just a few hours after what had seemed to be a breakthrough in a five-week standoff over the construction of a subdivision on land the aboriginal protesters claim is their land.

Barricades that the Six Nations protesters had erected on April 20 on Highway 6 came down as planned early Monday.

However, traffic was still being impeded because several dozen non-aboriginal protesters had set up a human barricade of their own.

That led to a scuffle between native and non-native demonstrators. Six Nations members then rushed to set up a new barrier.

The non-native blockade began Friday night, as part of a weekly demonstration by members of the community frustrated about the barricade that has been in place for almost five weeks...

Thanks Milton. That's a very good idea. I'll be sending him an email too shortly.

I can guess that the bleeding heart crowd is yet again a la Trudeau cheering for the natives but this is sick.

1 - The Mohawks cause a blackout due to vandalism, endagnering people's lives and wrecking businesses that employ largely poor people,

2 - The six nations start tearing up roads,

3 - they have now been vaught on TV attacking old ladies.

4 - This is in addition to overturning cars, burning tires, and inconveniencing everyone.

--In any sane country, these criminals would be dealt with with the most severe military force necessary--but our country is too busy defending the enlightened government of Afghanistan.

I think your right Perturbed...

I was a fairly strong supporter of the native action, but after the events of a day ago, there is obviously NO ONE in charge on the other side as their position and tactics keep changing...

It's ultimately going to come down to a negotiated settlement anyway and last time I looked, the natives, regardless of their noble cause, will still have to deal with Canada, even if they are on their own land.

To Canada's credit, we have been awfully tolerant of the more radical elements--maybe just once, the feds should take their rhetoric seriously and tell them, 'OK...your a sovereign country so act like one...or would like us to recall our Ambassador and invade?'

If Petersen looks bad, it's his own fault--when the power went off, he should have called Ottawa. You can't negotiate under that climate and negotiate is what they HAVE to do

Rural @ Tue May 23, 2006 6:51 am

The victims here are the residents of Caledonia who have NO say in protecting THEIR rights, who have seen a PUBLIC road blocked for weeks, have now seen the road once again damaged (this time dug up) and NOTHING done about it. The city has final declared an emergency and called for the Province and more importantly the FEDERAL Government to step in and end what some are now calling terrorism. I think that is going a little to far but must again agree with Perturbed, what other group of Canadians would be allowed to continue this type of behavior (irregardless of the correctness or status of their claims) without arrest.
The natives version of events contains their own “spin” on things as I am sure do some of the reports from the “other side” so it is difficult to find the truth of some reports. However there is NO DOUBT that a public road has be blocked and damaged and that alone is grounds for the arrest of those manning the barricade.
Early reports this morning say that a car has been driven into a transformer station resulting in the loss of power to 8000 residents. It remains to be seen who is responsible but I find it hard to believe that the Caledonia residents would have anything to gain by shutting down their own power supply. It is apparent that the non native residents have now had enough of this BS and are making their views known at the barricade, unfortunately some natives and whites have got into physical conflicts, is any one surprised?
Those who break the law or take law into their own hands be they White, Native, Black, Green or Martian MUST face the consequences of their actions!

If you buy property that proves to have been stolen, it can be confiscated without recompense. That's the law in our fair nation. The natives' land was stolen. The white guys have no "rights" to be trampled on........

"If you buy property that proves to have been stolen, it can be confiscated without recompense."

That may be true, but there is a legal process to do so and it does not include abritarialy seizing the land, damaging public property or blocking public highways.

As I read and re-read the posts by
perturbed and Rural I am struck by the shear definiteness of their statements and also by how sincerely they believe what they are expressing.
It is an indication of exactly how indoctrinated they are.

I do not necessarily agree with the tactics being employed “BUT” understand totally why those actions are being used.

Anyone making a statement like the following one has no clue what they are talking about.
“Those who break the law or take law into their own hands be they White, Native, Black, Green or Martian MUST face the consequences of their actions!”

In my opinion it is about time this fallacy of “the law’ was taken away from those who invented it and replaced with a higher moral standard.
What “LAW” gave the “right” to invade a nation, this one, and impose upon those living here “law” of the invaders?

RPW has it correct with this “If you buy property that proves to have been stolen, it can be confiscated without recompense. That's the law in our fair nation. The natives' land was stolen. The white guys have no "rights" to be trampled on........”

Rural’s reply “That may be true, but there is a legal process to do so and it does not include abritarialy seizing the land, damaging public property or blocking public highways.” Totally misses the point.
That point is as stated above.

Stoutlimb @ Tue May 23, 2006 3:17 pm

Then why are the neighboring townspeople who have no claim to that land suffering? The Mohawks complaint is with the Federal Government, not their neighbors. I'm sure all the local businesses who couldn't give a rats ass who owns that subdivision didn't appreciate losing power for 3 days.

Lets call it for what it is, terrorism.

Diogenes @ Tue May 23, 2006 5:35 pm

Terrorism Is it?
How original? not very!
the word is over used

terror
noun
1 [C or U] (violent action which causes) extreme fear:
They fled from the city in terror.
There was sheer/abject terror in her eyes when he came back into the room.
Lots of people have a terror of spiders.
What he said struck terror in my heart (= made me very frightened).
The separatists started a campaign of terror (= violent action causing fear) to get independence.
Heights have/hold no terrors for me (= do not frighten me).

2 [C] someone, especially a child, who behaves badly and is difficult to control:
My brother is a little terror.

Stoutlimb is a terror(ist)

The "neighbours" are living on stolen land. They have no rights. Caveat Emptor!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caveat_emptor
If the federal government (and/or provincial ones) IMPLIED that they do, then I would say that it is the neighbours who have the beef with the government, for misleading them.
Something about the Brooklyn Bridge comes to mind.........
---
RickW
