Great idea Catherine. How about a march to protest the North American Union Security and Prosperity Partnership too.

Not to be a fly in the ointment more of a heads up on a mentality to be dealt with… from my mail box.
As long as there are those with the following mindset (the ones I refer to as the eaters of government BS) Resisters will be looked on as traitorous so perhaps a march against ignorance is also in order.
AND! I fully support CAP on their march

Free speech ends where aiding the enemy begins
By Lethbridge Herald

Aunt Mary came to England from Germany in the mid-1930s. There, she met and married a Brit and had a couple of children. At the outbreak of Second World War, Mary’s husband joined the army and went off to fight Mary’s countrymen. Mary, left to raise the children, quite naturally interacted with the neighbours and, in conversation, mentioned that Hitler had done some good. He made the trains run on time, put everyone to work and stopped rape by castrating the rapists. It wasn’t long before Mary received a visit from the police. She was informed Britain was at war; Hitler never did any good, ever! and if she didn’t shut her mouth she would be arrested and thrown in jail for the duration of the war.
Harsh medicine? Perhaps. But when a nation is at war, anyone who gives comfort to the enemy is not only a traitor but puts the fighting forces’ lives in jeopardy. Britain had to curtail Mary’s right to free speech because she was aiding and abetting the enemy.
The war we fight with Muslim extremists is one of the worst conflicts we have ever fought. There is no front line; the enemy does not wear a uniform; he hides and stores his weaponry among the ordinary citizens, and has no qualms about killing his own countrymen in order to murder a few “infidels.” One of his best weapons, apart from staging events for media consumption, is to cause mass casualties by the cowardly process of getting in among them and blowing up. He knows as soon as the news reaches home, the “Chamberlainesque” peaceniks will rise to the bait and start talking withdrawal.
Jumping Jack Layton and a few fellow travellers of the loony left responded just as they were supposed to, squawking “bring the boys home,” and “It’s too tough for us out there,” proving to the Taliban, once more, terrorism pays. Thanks Jack. You’re doing a great job giving comfort to our enemies.
Like the cops told Aunt Mary, if you can’t say anything encouraging, keep your trap shut or be thrown in the slammer till this fight is over. The next soldier’s death is on you, boy!
LAURENCE DEVERALL

Thus far there is a freedom of speach, there is however no 'entitlement'

Yikes, Laurence sounds like he's from FreeDominion. Why do the war lovers always have to drag out the tired, worn out cliche "loony left"? Is that the best they have?

Sadly, so many people in Canada buy into this crap that fanatical muslims are lurking in the shadows, ready to kill us at any moment. In fact, someone on freedominion (I was reading it for entertainment value, although it is truly scary what some of these people think) was spouting off how Muslims were ready to take over the US and Canada. He sounded frantic, like we only had a few hours left before they invaded.

Make no mistake, branding muslims in this way has been a deliberate, calculated move by the right wing to gain support for their imperialist endeavours, and it has been accepted by far too many people. It is pure and simple racism. Imagine turning "Radical Islam" into "Radical Judaism" Good god, heads would roll. Yet, media gets away with this stuff. This war on terrorism is a farce, there is no such thing as Al Queda, Bush wasn't elected by the people he was elected by fraud, if the Republicans manage to somehow win in November we can be sure Diebold made it happen.

If anyone in this country supports war then I encourage them to volunteer their time in the army.

I for one don't believe marches and rallies do anything to change Government opinion. I have been to rallies here in Vancouver and I feel uncomfortable amongst those yelling such tired slogans as "Whose Streets? Our Streets" Or "This is what Democracy looks like." This type of action does not work. The left and well, those who are just plain sensible need to find a way to infiltrate the mass media. In fact I saw on the CBC a few years ago now and I can't remember who it was, who said it is time the labour movement in Canada started using some of their huge amounts of funds to put out some sort of daily paper. Yes we have the internet but progressives need to move beyond that somehow.

FootPrints @ Sun Oct 15, 2006 1:06 pm

I ordered my shirt :) It might not be here on time. I'm hoping to attend the rally. Is anyone else from vive going?

I love the idea of that newspaper. There are pitfalls. I once watched a
good friend quit his job as News Editor of a Southam Daily newspaper,
so disgusted that he set up a small weekly newspaper in which he began
to publish the unvarnished facts he saw around him in a small B.C. city.

The Southam daily turned their big guns on him. Easily, they chopped
him down. They cut their ad. rates in half. They developed give-away
schemes to draw in new subscribers. Somehow the local businesses
became scared to place their ads anywhere except in the Southam
pages.

It took only a year before my friend was bankrupt, his business and even
his home lost. When he returned to newspaper publishing, he played the
rules ...

BUT ... there are now the on-line news services which can't be touched
so easily, not like that.

So it'd be a great idea to establish a solid, investigative, paid-staff, on-
line news service. There are some small-size good ones, but none as
yet who send out their reporters on a daily basis to collect the news
fresh and unadulterated.

I support the march as well, I hope we won't be subjected to speeches by Noam Chomsky this time. As for LAURENCE DEVERALL, ask him where the proof is that the muslims and or islamists attacked us or our allies inside our respective countries. He can't use 911 cause that was a false flag op and the latest scientific poll says that 84% of US citizens think the US government is running a cover up. Beside that, opposing the war is not putting our soldiers in danger, supporting those who sent our children to war is putting our soldiers in danger. LAURENCE DEVERALL is entitled to his opinion, however ignorant it is, and I am entitled to mine.
---

I think protests and rallies serve a great purpose. It helps people to realize they are not alone. Even if it isn't shown on t.v. when people see it for themselves all across Canada, they may begin to recognize a different reality. This is a great cooperative effort by many, many groups, which CAP was thrilled to be a part of.

As for the Letter to the editor here is the link to Dio's above
http://www.lethbridgeherald.com/article_4549.php
and actually I responded to it, so here is my letter which they also printed. fyi

Dear Editor

Laurence Deverall wrote an interesting perspective on free speech. (Letter Oct.11) Where he misses the point of free speech, is that had the truth been told regarding Hitler’s agenda, and many had spoken out, thousands if not millions might have been saved from the torture, detainment and murder! A free nation ought to have freedom of the press to report the truth. That is not the case at this time in history, nor was it during Hitler’s reign. Sending our youth to fight corporate wars does not support the troops, it supports the corporate elite greed and our youth are the sacrificial lambs! Dissent does not equal terrorism! Mr. Deverall must be very pleased with the new law called, ‘Military Commissions Act 2006’ (Oct.5,2006) which gives Mr.Bush the right to arrest, detain, torture and/or assassinate anyone he deems an enemy anywhere in the world. It’s not only the end of free speech, but the end of sovereignty for all! Now the question becomes did our soldiers who have died for our freedom for so many generations, do so in vain? They believed they were fighting fascism and dictatorships and yet here we are! Unlike Mr. Deverall who says shut up and suck it up…I say speak now or there will never be peace!

Yours truly
"Bring our Kids Home" sounds age oriented. Everyone of any age should be protesting. I hate to say, but terms like "corporate wars" or any term referance to the "radical", turn Canadians off. Bring them home because "it's not our war, it's the Americans" war verses "the people of Afghanistan needs us". Even Layton is not suggesting to abandon Afghanistan but to stop as a warrior and continue as a peace keeper. In any respect, it's words that will make the differance. Canadians have to see the true perspective without being annoyed by "how" it's said. Good luck with the campaign!

whelan costen @ Mon Oct 16, 2006 2:14 pm

Everyone of every age should be protesting! I agree. Bring Our Kids Home, is a reflection of the fact that those who promote war are not(with a few exceptions) sending their kids. Those who see war as the only alternative and enjoy the fruit of this industry are not the ones being asked to shed their blood. The majority of Canadian soldiers serving in Afghanistan are under 30 years, if you've lived past 30 you will see that those years are the youthful years. They will not be kids when they return, of that there is little doubt.

The people of Canada will be paying for this war mentality for many years to come, both in our families and our national coffers. We could be leaders of peace. That is how I see our role in the world and that is the role I would like to see our youth play. My heart breaks for those young men and women who have gone to fight for our country, because we have sent them; but what are they fighting for, what horrors will they be sentenced to live with, if they live? Those are the questions we should all be asking on their behalf.

boflaade @ Mon Oct 16, 2006 4:12 pm

I see your point. Canadians were always for peace and tough enough to take it on the chin. We didn't always attempt to justify our role and always anticipated that our actions were to be for a good cause. Now we are told our role has changed and we have to accept it. Canadians now feel helpless. Those "kids" don't accept the same values. Few are over there to bring peace and many there are confused. They are told the use of force is a good thing but see no end to it. In my time, the military was hated. No matter our role, we were considered war mongers. Today "support the troops" is great for the ego but what does it mean?
