On November 30, as President Bush visited Canada to meet with Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin in an effort to improve the two countries\' strained relations, right-wing pundit Ann Coulter and CNN Crossfire co-host Tucker Carlson ridiculed the United States\' northern neighbor. On FOX News Channel\'s Hannity & Colmes, Coulter said that Canadians \"better hope the United States doesn\'t roll over one night and crush them. They are lucky we allow them to exist on the same continent.\" On CNN\'s Wolf Blitzer Reports, Carlson stated: \"Without the U.S., Canada is essentially Honduras, but colder and much less interesting\"; he went on to say that instead of following politics, \"the average Canadian is busy dogsledding.\" And on Crossfire, Carlson referred to the \"limpid, flaccid nature of Canadian society.\"

I don't think beef and Canada should be used in the same sentence even when joking.

Nice job of reporting what Coulter and Tucker said. Now explain how they're wrong. You people used to complain about being not being noticed. Not that you're not under the radar anymore, you're still unhappy. No pleasing some people.

Tucker Carlson, Ann Coulter, Pat Buchannan and their likes are just trolls. Ignore them. Why should we care what they think?<p> <p>---<br>"If you must kill a man, it costs you nothing to be polite about it." Winston Churchill <br />

We should care because we already have CNN, and now Fox news is coming. The assimilation is going to be a gradual one.

"better hope the United States doesn't roll over one night and crush them." -- Yes I do hope that doesn't happen.

Talk about arrogance, these guys are supposed to be news reporters?

No, they aren't reporters. Tucker Carlson's job is to 'debate' people by getting under their skin. Like the other day against Carolyn Parrish. He tried to use thinly vieled 'humour' or satire such as 'The average Canadian isn't concerned with such things because you're all out dogsledding.' Things that are supposed to get under the average Canadians skin.

We know better, and to Ms. Parrish's credit, she didn't take the bait on that troll. Not our fault if the average hayseed decides that what he says is truth, and stereotypes us in a role 100 years out of date.

Canadians are smarter that you give them credit for ;)

While these digs are amusing in the same way that so many were amused by Carolyn Parrish's remarks about Americans, the fact that there may be an element of truth is what hurts.

Canada and Canadians don't define themselves or this country very well at all - do we all just hang around on this territory because it's pretty safe and we pay for each other's health care?

So Peace, Order and Good Government aren't the most stirring ideals on the planet - they were better than the nihilism that's required of a good Canadian today.

Even taking the core of Carlson's dogsledding comment, does this <a href='//ohvotesuppression.blogspot.com/2004/11/breath-with-lebron.html'>basketball's more important than honest elections</a> post indicate any better Mercan interest in politics?

robert_fisher @ Thu Dec 02, 2004 1:46 pm

Are they Doc? Are they? Maybe you haven't been to America Jr lately...aka where I live: Southern Ontario.

I know that they are not reporters...but they are playing one on tv. That's what I am getting at. Maybe Canada should introduce some new CRTC guidelines that outline what can be called 'news'?

I give Canadians credit, just not all of us. So many people don't care about what the 'issues' are, or how they effect them (from my personal experience). Look at our election results, who wins, and what percentage votes.

What is it like for me to be a Canadian?

I believe in the rights for gays and lesbians to marry legally, the right for women to choose abortion, the freedom to object to my political leaders and not fear improsonment.

Just a few thoughts.

Dr Caleb @ Thu Dec 02, 2004 1:49 pm

True, there will always be the uninformed apathetic ones. But in contrast, look at the numbers on BMD! 70% opposed!

Sometimes, the message gets through.

Welcome to the site, Golfer.

How about "I believe Justice is not vengance. Justice is punishment tempered with accountability.".

Doc, my feelings exactly.

I'd hate to be a homosexual, or a muslim living in the US. The US is going in a different social direction than that of Canada.

Is either path wrong? History will decide that.

Guest @ Thu Dec 02, 2004 1:58 pm

<i>They are lucky we allow them to exist ...</i> <p> Funnily enough, Canadians are now being served in a similar manner that they themselves have been serving and still are serving their own Canadian 'dissidents', known as Quebecers. When the tables are turned, being on the receiving end usually doesn't feel as good as when you're the one dishing it out.

robert_fisher @ Thu Dec 02, 2004 2:14 pm

True. It's just so damn easy to get riled up these days. Especially when something that feels so important to me is ignored, and I have a tought time convincing even my closest pers of that fact.
