Stand tall and know what you are doing is right. There are thousands upon thousands of us across Canada. You are not alone. I am getting the hard-press right now too. They are calling my home a dozen times a day leaving messages - this even though I have told no less than four people I will not be doing the census no matter what until ordered by a court of law. They even have it in writing three times by my own hand - signed with my very name, yet they persist.
Don't let the naysayers here on these forums or elsewhere rattle you. Because they have no backbone doesn't mean you should bend like a pussy-willow in the wind as they have.
We need to stand together and together we will win. Peaceful refusal of an immoral order to support war criminals and war profiteers is our duty as informed Canadians. Wear that badge of honour with pride.

I had a guy come to my door. As soon as he said Census, I said "We don't want any" and tried to close the door. He blocked the door and said "But its not..." and I cut him off with "We don't WANT ANY" and I closed the door. He left some forms in my mailbox so I dutifully scribbled answers in all the boxes with my left hand and tossed it in a mailbox - same as I did with the first form.
Can I help it if they cannot read someone's offhand writing?
First of all, I'm looking for hard evidence that the information collected is pointless or is used for some nefarious purpose. Anyone who could help would be appreciated. I'm absolutely not interested in speculation or people just "knowing" it's true, because that's absolute nonsense.
Secondly, what's the point of protesting is nobody knows why you're doing it? If all you're doing is not filling it in, then you're not protesting anything. Why should statscan change anything they're doing if people just act like incompetent jerks treating census workers badly while not even providing basic information in a civil manner (like heaven forbid anyone should be bothered to fill out a form). Why not actually DO something like getting the word out about WHY one objects to the census. Or why don't people do something that costs them if they're so concerned with principles, like not paying their taxes or filing returns because they object. People who just don't decide to fill the census out aren't conscientious objectors, they're no different than people who just don't bother to do it because they don't care about this country in the first place.
I guess you ran out of reasonable arguments, so you had to resort to insults.
I wonder how many of you who are boycotting the census are actually willing to go jail for your beliefs? This Elanor seems shocked that she's actually facing the law. What did she think would happen?
I'm not knocking you who stand up for what you believe. I think it's very honorable and admirable to believe in what's right so strongly that you are willing to go to jail for it. What I am wondering is how many objecters are just fair weather complainers who never realized that there are consequences to civil disobedience. Boycotters must be prepared from day one to either pay the fine or do the time.
I wonder if the organizers of this boycott made that sufficiently clear?
Hello? Knock Knock? Anyone home?
- I guess you didn't notice the petitions we sent.
- I guess you didn't see THIS website, among several, which had the Census issue front and center for a long time.
- I guess you missed the letters to the editor and the calls to the local radio talk shows?
- I guess you didn't notice the messages we sent directly to the minister and the replies we got?
- I know you haven't seen me as I explained this issue do literally dozens of people since I first found out the American Military was handling out census.
- Lastly, I guess you didn't catch the obvious lie in the Statscan claim that the Americans wouldn't have access to the data - the fact that they are doing the PRINTING. You cannot print data that you do not have.
Shouldn't you be off complaining about those "entitlement babies" that childishly expect the Government to come running to help them simply every time they are dumb enough to get caught in a war zone?

I just deleted 48 such spammer accounts, based on the email addresses used for signup (lovesnake.net, among others).
Additionally, I tightened security a wee bit more on the server side; if they were exploiting a hole, it's now closed."
in view of the number of spammer accts one cant help but wonder if this is your game as well

If there was ever a time for Canadians to become pushy - now is the time - for time is running out on this nation called Canada.
People can read what is coming in their mail. People can understand what is being told to them by StatsCan representatives.
Should people reconsider what they are doing? Sure, for the worst plan is the one that can't be changed.
I worked in jails, and the prospect of going to one for refusing to be part of war profiteering and war crimes doesn't excite me in the least, but if it's the price some must pay for the greater good - then so be it.
If someone walks away now, I wouldn't think any less of them. They are now in scare mode. How often do people have letters shoved in their mail boxes proclaiming - "Please be advised that Statistics Canada has successfully prosecuted individuals who refuse to cooperate and the courts have imposed the maximum fine"? It doesn't get any clearer than that. People who live within the laws of this nation do so by their own volition, but to break them over the census suggests something greater. For sometimes you need to break the law to change the law.

"I wonder if the organizers of this boycott made that sufficiently clear?"<br />
<br />
It was made very clear that outright refusal or lying on the forms could land you in jail according to the letter of the law, although such a thing has not happened in the past.<br />
<br />
It was also made clear that we were encouraged not to break the law, but instead comply "minimally" which meant creating forms that had to be manually read by people, rather than through LM's scanners.<br />
<br />
It was also made clear that we were to inform our politicians and Stats Can of why we are resisting the census.<br />
<br />
It's all here at this link<br />

In general, I protest against an unjust government by dragging my feet whenever it wants me to jump. I always do my best to inform others about how we're being screwed and what they can start doing about it. The best weapon we have is education, followed by organized resistance. Individuals acting alone cannot possibly fight this monster off, it'll take many thousands acting together. Only through a massive change in our collective thinking will we see significant change for the better. Afterall, the government is mostly made out of regular people who have no understanding of what is going wrong and how their behaviours are making the situation worse.<br />
<br />
The census is small potatoes compared to our incredibly unjust taxation system. The list is very long.<br />
"refuse to cooperate"
I like that line, because what they are really saying is "refuse to comply".
The George Orwell's 1984 style of word play is yet another reason to resist.
Hello? Knock Knock? Anyone home? I guess you didn't read my post.
I was not referring to the people who actually PROTEST, I was referring to the people who "protest" by simply not doing the census form or acting like uncivil skunks to census workers. And yes, you should be prepared to face the consequences of your actions. And why don't you actually go out there and collect some hard evidence of what LM is doing with this data rather than whining and speculating. Leaving it up to Canadians to make a "judgment call" does no one any good without any basis for it. Instead of writing commentaries and editorials, where is the substantive data to prove to Canadians what happens to their information? Or is the only thing to be done here pointing out areas of concern and letting other people and the politicians do the actual leg work?
If you're talking about "keeping the census Canadian" and keeping the information strictly confidential, then I support it. That's a good reason to have qualms about the census. If you're talking about acting like louts to people who come knocking or protesting because we just don't think anyone needs this information, that has nothing to do with conscientious objection. There's no reason to treat census workers (who have nothing to do with contracts with LM) uncivilly and like dirt in the name of "protesting", and we can send those people to whatever warzone along with the entitlement babies along with the 500$ fine.
No, please don't worry, I don't have any such "game".
Unfortunately, the government and the people at large can force anyone to comply to their will and they have not right written to allow people not to fill out a census form. Just look at what happened to 'free speech' in this country.
But what's the point of having a census if everyone doesn't fill it out? If the census weren't mandatory, there would be no point in having one. Plenty of people would not fill it out for whatever reason. You would get completely different response percentages from different districts. You could not have a random sampling census. By definition, it would not be a census if they did not get everyone. Plus, why the hell should some people fill out a census form, if others don't do it or don't have to. I don't see the problem with getting names and ages for statistics purposes, and random sampling would not work across a country like Canada, especially if it were not mandatory. (They also do random sampling with the census by only giving that longer form to a percentage of the population and not asking everyone to fill it out.)
Free speech and taxes are issues to take more seriously.
I guess it wasn't, judging by Elanor's shock. Either that or people don't read sufficiently these days.
