I'm getting fucking old.
Can't sleep late no matter what time I get to bed even though there are no more kids at home.

Fucking afternoon nap, right on!!!

EDIT: Sorry, I thought I was in the FUCK thread.

2Cdo 2Cdo:
Having just entered the ranks of the non-smoking (two weeks, so far so good) I was wondering about other peoples dealings with quitting the evil weed!

As an avid runner, and a bit of an exercise nut I always thought somehow that the little bit of smoking I was doing wasn't "that bad" as I was extremely active. Well, within the first week I could not believe some of the stuff I coughed out of me, which surprised me because I never suffered from "smokers cough" ever! Suffice to say it was a real eye-opener! 8O

The other thing I am curious about is how others dealt with "nicotine withdrawl", or if they even had any. I was "only" a half pack a day smoker and so far I have had zero cravings, none, zippo, zilch, you get the point! :D I attribute that to the fact that between running, working out, working and home renovations, I have no time to think about cravings!

The last point is I have already noticed a marked increase in lung capacity (tested every other day) and times for my average run have dropped markedly! I am seriously considering doing the K-town triathalon later this year to see how much my time has decreased since last year, but I think the wife has other plans for this summer, something about Italy and the Med around August. 8)

Look forward to everyones input.

[B-o] Well done! I quit ten years ago after bronchitis every winter and the possibility of developing asthma scared me smart. Your one up on me in that you have a very active lifestyle to deal with any weight gain (if I could go back, that's one thing I would plan very hard for) I added several pounds but shed them later.

Now, I look back on that habit is the stupidist thing I could have done, and quitting as the smartest.

Good luck and hold fast!

Don't get cocky by thinking you have it licked in a few weeks. Sure the first few days are the toughest, but there's other milestones--four months, a year. The intensity of the urge to smaoke never goes away, it just happenes a lot less frequently. A freind of mine--a non-smoker for ten years or so now--still reaches for his shirt pocket at a certain stop light adn is incredibly depresed, just for a fleeting second, when his smokes aren't there.

Don't underestimate your enemy.

Good luck!

Non-smoking two years and counting...

Very true. I was amazed, ten years on, when one night I was drinking beer and shooting darts in a buddy's garage surrounded by smokers. Man, for about a minute, I sure wanted a smoke...

breathing excercises help ease the nicotine cravings.Take deep breaths and hold for as long as you comfortably can when the attack hits you.

Screw deep breathing.....choke the first person who makes you feel like wanting a smoke....it definately occupies the hands....

That's satisfying! I took up kilt making after I quit. Nothing like the monotony of sewing to keep one's hands busy.

Yeah, never been fishing, I dont usually get up till 10 or 11, dont think it is going to happen for me :P

I'm curious. do you have a job or children?

Zoraja was a single, Canadian student studying in Scotland at that time. She hasn't been around for a while now.

Federal Health Nurse ran a program here, told me to get Zyban and come back in 10-14 days. I did, then she says "You smoke 2 packs of Exports a day. You need to wear TWO Step 1 patches and chew up to 20 4mg Nicorettes a day to replace that. Fuck the Doctor, don't tell him. He'll whine about risk and high blood pressure etc etc. You wanna take a 1/10,000 chance of a stroke or keep up a 50/50 chance of lung cancer? You decide."
It worked, but I relapsed after a year. Been trying over and over again for the last three!
Look at the SHIT that goes on when you smoke. Buy cheap smokes, they're dry as a desert. So you 'treat' yourself to a $10 pack of brand names and the third one COUGH COUGH HACK HACK because there's a fucking lump of styrofoam in the middle of one, no quality control whatsoever for $10 a pack.
Check out the label: Accord brand (used to be 'lights'): Nicotine 10-27 mg. It could be this or it could be three times as much - what a load of shit legalized wild guess at the contents.
Stick on a nicotine patch and the thing slides off after an hour. People say everyone knows you have to wrap a bandage overtop... well I say I hope this pseudo-pharm corporation ain't the same one that make's yer old lady's fucking birth control patch.
"Oh everyone knows you need to wrap it gauze to keep it in place!"
Yeah right, like my poor sisters back in the 60s when 'minipad' meant it wasn't quite the size of an Ottoman and you needed ALL your Girl Guide badges to be able to tie all the ropes, belts, hawsers and pulleys to hold it in place and you tucked away the mini-skirt to wear Gramma's frumpy black babushka skirt for a week every month!
Then I read the local rag and discover a 50 yr old woman busted for possession of two joints. But she could legally smoke ALL the tobacco you need to die, long as you shell out the taxes!
The landlord 'informs' us smoking will no longer be tolerated in "his" house. Regardless of the fact as long as I rent it it's legally "my" house. The other one sends a letter that he's been ORDERED to inform me I cannot smoke in the shop I rent, new public place regulations. BAH!!!
So I'm standing outside the shop in -10 weather with the freaking wind howling off the lake in my face enjoying a nice relaxing smoke and this bitch walks by and comments " You're within ten feet of the door, I could report you!"
I go livid!
I want to say, "Well you're a woman you should be grateful for anything over six inches!"
I'm in a small Northern town, so I could make light of her and say (spreading my hands), "I fish! This is more than ten feet!"
Then it clicks... she's a native woman....
"Hey don't rag on me. It's not my fault! SOMEONE got my ancestors hooked on this shit... I want reparations!!!

wow.. cool.

With age has come my inability to sleep. It irritates me. Even if I'm up waiting for teenagers to come home , and should sleep in on the weekends... I"m wide awake at 6 bells.

Work until 11? still wide awake at 6.

I'm scottish decent... my 19 yr old wants to do a year of university abroad... Scotland would be a great choice.

i only smoke when I drink [B-o]

The problem... I drink a lot.

Bodah @ Sun May 17, 2009 5:49 pm

My problem with quiting smoking is that I was a physically dependent smoker. Not psychological or a mixture of both.

So the patch did it for me, in 2 months.

Have to be weary of your triggers though, for me it was beer on the weekends. So I quit that for awhile, then slowly went to ceasers, then back to beer but not as many. [B-o] Getting old.

The mornings were tough too with that cup of coffee, so what I did was set my alarm about 15 minutes later. That way I had no time to sit around, it was eat, shower , get dressed & get to work.

Man I hate these kind of newbie posters who feel obligated to chime in with their two words of wisdom on every dead thread.

dino_bobba_renno @ Thu Jan 09, 2014 9:25 am

Well since we're on the topic (thanks for the necro Mr. Spammer :) ) I now have one week in without smoking .... sort of lol. I cheated a few times but I still figure that's worth a good ol "pat myself on the back" moment. :D
