The Canucks look to clinch their season series against the defending Stanley Cup champion, Chicago Blackhawks, with a win tonight at Rogers Arena.

For the second time in the last three years, the Canucks' season will come to an end after 82 games played. But with eight games remaining between now and the off-season, don't think there's nothing left on the line. In recent days, both team captain Henrik Sedin and his brother, Daniel, have spoken on the need to have pride in their play. With 'Sedinery' being honoured tonight, the players had better be ready to compete even if a playoff berth won't be awaiting them in two weeks time.

While this contest might not be that significant for the Blackhawks in the grand scheme of things, the two points are still critical for them in their attempt to fend off the Predators to remain in a top-three spot in the Central Division and to get a more favourable first round playoff match-up. Thanks to their 4-1 win last night in Calgary, they begin the day sitting two points ahead of Nashville in the standings. Chicago can officially clinch a playoff berth with a point earned tonight.

If they're anything like the Flames they'll choose the wrong time to go on a late season winning streak and end up taking themselves out of the picture for the good draft picks. Guaranteed to happen to at least a couple of the Canadian teams this time around. Shitty enough to miss the playoffs by a mile but unfortunately skilled enough to wreck their shot at a top-three draft pick.

   

Except the Canucks will be contenders again. The Leafs may never be contenders.

   

The Canucks play the first of two straight games against the San Jose Sharks tonight as they begin a home-and-home series versus their Pacific Division foe.

It would be an understatement to suggest that home ice has not been kind all season long to the Canucks, who have a league-low 13 victories in front of their home fans. The Sharks are one of the teams that have walked into Rogers Arena this season with a swagger and rightfully so. Not only have they won both their games played here this season but they're riding a win streak in Vancouver that stretches back over three years. The Canucks would love nothing more than to put an end to that streak tonight rather than allowing it to continue on through another off-season.

The Canucks will get a small boost to their line-up when they face a Sharks team that earned a 5-2 victory last night over the Kings to clinch their ticket to the post-season. Markus Granlund, who has missed the last seven games with an upper-body injury, is expected to return tonight with Linden Vey likely the odd man out. Look for Jacob Markstrom to be between the pipes for Vancouver, who is looking to put a halt to an eight-game winless skid.

The Canucks close out their home-and-home series, and their season series, against the San Jose Sharks tonight down at the Shark Tank.

Setting records can be good thing but not when it's one for a futility streak. This season's version of the Canucks is hoping to avoid their share of history. Vancouver brings a nine-game losing streak into tonight's contest (eight regulation losses plus one shootout loss). The franchise record for most consecutive losses is 10 games set back in 1997 and while this new NHL era may recognize this stretch as officially a "winless" streak as opposed to a losing one, the Canucks would be just as happy to avoid association of any kind to that unfortunate mark set nearly 10 years ago.

If the Canucks, who fell 4-1 to the Sharks on Tuesday to begin this home-and-home series, are to bring their long skid to an end, they will have to do so without the services of rookie Jake Virtanen. Virtanen was assessed a five-minute interference penalty and game misconduct two nights ago for his hit on San Jose's Roman Polak and has subsequently been handed a two-game suspension by the NHL. He is eligible to return on Monday when the Canucks host the Kings at Rogers Arena.

The Canucks wrap up their two-games-in-two-days road trip tonight when they close out their season series against the Anaheim Ducks.

If the Canucks were able to play the majority of their games at the Shark Tank in San Jose, making the playoffs would probably be a shoo-in. Last night, Vancouver finally put an end to a nasty nine-game winless skid with a 4-2 victory over the Sharks marking their sixth consecutive win at the Shark Tank. Their success at the Honda Center in Anaheim, however, is nothing to write home about. The Canucks have just two wins in their last seven trips to Anaheim – both shootout victories – and have not managed a regulation win at the Honda Center since January 25, 2013.

A regulation win tonight would give the Canucks the season series bragging rights over the Ducks. In order to do that, however, they will have to find a way to snap the Ducks' three-game win streak and possibly do so without the services of Sven Baertschi, who left last night's contest with a lower body injury. Expect to see Jacob Markstrom between the pipes for the Canucks. John Gibson has been the goalie on record for the Ducks' last two victories although he briefly left Anaheim's 8-3 win against Calgary on Wednesday after being shaken up in a collision with teammate Hampus Lindholm before returning to secure the victory.
